Golden Eagles Sweep Past Wesleyan on Saturday

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston baseball continued their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, downing the Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan in a pair of MEC contests, winning game one 15-3 before a much more subtle offensive turnout in game two, winning 2-0. In game two, Colt Webb carried a no-hit bid through 6.1 innings pitcher before surrendering his first hit of the ball game on his way to a complete-game shutout.

How it Happened
  • The Bobcats struck first, as Cade Leach scored on a single in the second off of Charleston starting pitcher Logan Campbell to put the visitors ahead 1-0.
  • From there, Charleston would go on to score 15 of the next 16 runs over the course of the next five innings. In the second, Hayden Cartt walked in a run, Bryce Toussaint singled home a pair, Drew Hefner tripled home a pair, and Tyler Dellerman recorded a sacrifice fly to put Charleston up 6-1 headed into the third.
  • In the third, the Bobcats would push across a run to cut the UC lead to 6-2.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Colby Johnson brought home Braxton Boddorf on a sacrifice fly to increase the Golden Eagle lead to 7-2.
  • In the 5th, the Golden Eagles struck again, plating six more runs as Will Glazebrook plated a pair on an RBI triple, Cartt singled home Glazebrook, Toussaint singled home Cartt, and Hefner doubled home Toussaint.
  • Jacob Kaiser would take over for the Golden Eagles in the sixth inning, finishing Campbell's day with a line of 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO
  • Kaiser would throw 1.0 inning allowing two walks while striking out a pair.
  • In the bottom of the 6th, Charleston plated three more runs as Jesse Elliott singled home Brayden McCallister, Colby Johnson doubled home Elliott, and Seth Freeman scored on a wild pitch.
  • In the 7th, Seth Nightingale would take over on the mound. Three Golden Eagle errors in the inning allowed for the Bobcats to push across the final run as the Golden Eagles went on to win 15-3.
  • In the game, Seth Freeman and JD Armstrong made their Golden Eagle debuts.

How it Happened
  • In a much quieter game on the offensive side, the Golden Eagles pushed across the only runs they needed in the 4th inning.
  • After four consecutive hits to open the inning, Pete Costigan singled home Tyler Dellerman and after Mitchell Vincent was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Andrew Berry would come across to plate a run and give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
  • Charleston starting pitcher Colt Webb carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and sacrificed a one-out base hit to Cade Leach in order to reach base and end the hitless streak for the Bobcats.
  • The game ended on a fielder's choice and a groundout as Colt Webb went on to pitch a complete game one-hit shutout.
  • Webb finished the game with a final line of 7.0 IP, 1 H, 13 SO, all while allowing no walks.

Charleston will return to the field tomorrow afternoon to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in another pair of games to conclude the weekend. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM and will be followed up by a 4:00 PM start in game two.
