Golden Eagles Sweep Bobcats, Holds Longest Win Streak in Program History

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston baseball team extended their win streak to the longest in school history (12), sweeping the Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Segra Field. On a beach themed day, the Golden Eagles looked like they were seeing beach balls at the plate, scoring 23 runs on 22 hits in the pair of games.

How it Happened
  • Much like the series opener, it was the Bobcats who struck first against Charleston starting pitcher Zane Lattig, as Cade Leach singled home Nick Grotti to give Wesleyan an early lead.
  • The lead didn't last long, as Braxton Boddorf, who recorded six RBI's on the day, singled home a pair in the bottom half of the inning to put Charleston ahead 3-0. With Pete Costigan at the dish and a pair of runners on, the leftfielder drove a high fastball over the leftfield fence which increased the Charleston lead to 5-1.
  • This chased Bobcat starter Michael Maiolo from the game, who finished the day with a line of 0.1 IP, 5 ER, 3 H, 1 SO. Wesleyan would go on to use six different pitchers in the game
  • In the bottom of the second, Charleston three more runs as Drew Hefner singled home a run, followed up by Boddorf driving in his third and fourth runs of the game on an single to left field.
  • In the third, the Bobcats were able to plate a pair of runs off of Lattig, who exited the game after pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking a pair and striking out three.
  • Robert Fultineer would come on in relief and log three innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.
  • In the bottom half of the third, Hayden Cartt hit a solo home run to increase the Charleston lead to 9-3.
  • In the 5th, Colby Johnson joined the hit parade after hitting a two-run home run to the left-centerfield gap which gave Charleston an 11-1 lead.
  • In the top of the 6th, Hunter Eplin homered off of Fultineer to give the Bobcats a late-game run before Owen MacNeil pitched a clean seventh inning, retiring each of the three batters he faced.

How it Happened
  • Charleston scored the opening run in the bottom of the second inning after Cartt singled home Boddorf. Later in the inning, Johnson tripled to the left-centerfield gap which brought home Cartt to put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-0.
  • The Bobcats scored their first run of the game in the third inning against Charleston starting pitcher Austin Henrich after Sam Ingram singled to right field, bringing home Adrian Delgado to bring the score to 2-1.
  • From there, it was all Charleston on the offensive side, as the Golden Eagles erupted for 10 runs over the next three innings, including a six-run sixth inning.
  • In the 4th, Hayden Cartt brought home William Glazebrook on a sacrifice fly and Hefner singled home Johnson.
  • In the 5th, Glazebrook singled home Boddorf to increase the Charleston lead to 5-1
  • In the 6th, Hefner recorded an RBI groundout, Tyler Dellerman doubled home Toussaint, Boddorf doubled home a pair and later scored on a wild pitch, Griffin Adkins singled home Glazebrook, and Cartt scored on a wild pitch.
  • Henrich's day finished after logging 6.0 IP, allowing 1 ER on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
  • Dane Sykes would go on to pitch a clean seventh inning, striking out one on three batters faced.
 
UP NEXT:
Charleston will hit the road next weekend, taking on the Senators from Davis & Elkins College in doubleheader action on both Saturday and Sunday.
