Men's Tennis Crowned MEC Regular Season Champions with Win over West Liberty

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The University of Charleston Men's Tennis program were crowned 2021 MEC Regular Season Champions with a 7-0 sweep over West Liberty on Sunday. The Golden Eagles finish their regular season with a 10-2 record, and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
UC came out of the blocks hot, clinching the doubles point in a dominant fashion by sweeping all three matchups. The #1 pair of John Giesberts and Drew Dagostine didn't put a foot wrong as they stormed to a quick 6-0 victory. The clinch of the doubles point was done by the freshman pair of Krish Patel and Jake Magill, playing at the #3 spot, who provided another 6-0 win for the Eagles. Frantisek Pirek and Lennert Stevens won at the #2 doubles spot, 6-3, providing the sweep for UC across all double's courts.

After a dominant doubles display, UC never looked back as they seized control across all singles courts, taking quick first sets in all positions. Freshman Jack Bowman won the race to the finish line, bringing home a 6-0 6-0 victory at #6 singles. The next point was provided by Alex Martinez playing at #4, as he cruised to a 6-1 3-0 retirement victory. The match clinching point came from Frantisek Pirek as he finished the season undefeated in conference singles play, winning 6-4 6-1 at the #3 position.

With the match out of reach for a West Liberty come back, Drew Dagostine kept the points coming for UC, winning 6-3 6-2 at #2. John Giesberts (#47) put in yet another strong performance, winning 6-2 7-5 at #1, to also finish the year undefeated in conference singles play. Lennert Stevens would round of the sweep for the Golden Eagles, winning his #5 singles match 6-4 6-4.
