Women Lead, Men in Third After Round One of the MEC Golf Championships

WARREN, Ohio – After the first round of the MEC Golf Championships held at Avalon Lakes Golf Course, the University of Charleston Women's Golf team (338) holds a three-stroke lead on West Virginia Wesleyan (341). On the men's side, the Golden Eagles (314) sit in 3rd after Tuesday's round, trailing West Liberty (2nd – 313) and Davis & Elkins College (306). Due to snow coverage and a forecast where the real feel will not exceed 31 degrees with gusts up to 23 mph, the conference has decided to cancel the second round of the tournament, which was scheduled for today, April 21, 2021. With the decision, the event will now be shortened to a maximum of 36-holes with the final round scheduled for tomorrow, April 22nd.
 
Women's Side
 On the women's side, Charleston leads by three shots over West Virginia Wesleyan, 338-341. Wheeling is in third (351) and Davis & Elkins is in fourth (365). WVWC's Kiana Toole and Carleigh Bolyard had the lowest rounds of the day shooting 79 and 80, respectively. UC's reigning MEC Player of the Year Elizabeth Karsten shot an 83 along with teammate Beatrice Dietz and Wheeling's Zoila Herrera, are in a tie for third.
 
The Golden Eagles were the only team in the field to have four participants shoot in the 80s for the day.
 
Men's Side
On the men's side, the D&E men had three players shoot in the 70s to help it post a 306 on the first day. Jordan Hyland shot 74, while teammates Evan Lewis and Jack Coleman each carded 76. Jack Harlen-Robertson rounded out the scoring with an 80.

West Liberty is in second (313), in large part due to Alex Easthom's round of 72 -- the low round of the day. Charleston's David Scragg was -1 heading into the final hole, but a double bogey left him with a 73 and in second place individually. UC is in third place in the team standings with a score of 314. Concord is in fourth with a first-round total of 319.
 
Charleston was one of two teams (Davis & Elkins) to have three players shoot in the 70s, as Scragg, Mitch Hoffman (76), and Cole Darbyshire (79) all represented.
