CHAMPIONS: Men's Tennis Wins Conference Tournament for First Time in Program History

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The University of Charleston Men's Tennis team extended their win streak to ten on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in the MEC Championship. The win marked the first MEC conference tournament championship for the team in their history.

The Golden Eagles came out of the starting gate extremely strong taking 1st and 3rd doubles by scores of 6-2, 6-4 respectively.  The number one doubles pair of Marshall Dagostine and John Giesberts played one of their best matches of the year, avenging a loss to the same Wesleyan pair in their previous match on April 9th.

In singles, Krish Patel led the way for Charleston with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at 5th singles over Charleston native, Anthony McIntosh.  Frantisek PIrek played exceptionally well at 3rd singles and defeated his opponent  6-4, 6-2.  With the team up 3-1 and only one more match needed, it was a race to see who would get the clinching point.  Eventually, it was Marshall Dagostine who took the team's final point by a score of 6-4, 6-4 over Harry Simaioforidis.  Dagostine's victory was especially sweet having lost to Simaioforidis in their regular season match.

In reflecting on the weekend, Head Coach and reigning MEC Coach of the Year Matt Santen said, "This has been a tremendous weekend for us.  We collected a lot of awards and won two hard fought matches.  I'm proud not just of how the team played but of how they conducted themselves as well. Sam Clarke (assistant coach) has done a fabulous job of helping each player achieve their potential."

This is the first conference championship for 15-year head coach Matt Santen and the first time the men's team and the women's team have won the conference championship in the same year. Both teams will advance to the NCAA tournament and are favorites to be the top seeds in the Atlantic Region.  The men's regional will be held May 8th and 9th while the women will play May 9-11. Both regionals are being by the University of Charleston and will be played at Schoenbaum Courts.
