How it Happened
The University of Charleston traveled to Athens, WV for a rematch with the Concord Mountain Lions after a mid-November conference opener that saw the Golden Eagles pick up a 94-74 win. On Wednesday, UC made it a sweep over the Mountain Lions by a score of 99-71.
The first half was close throughout as neither team led by more than six in the opening 20 minutes. A three-point shot by Keith Williams at the buzzer of the opening stanza trimmed UC's deficit to just one at 42-41 at intermission.
The second half remained close in the opening few minutes as the score was knotted up at 50-50 with 16 minutes to play. From there, UC would dominate the final 16 minutes of action as they used five different 6-0 or better runs and would outscore Concord 49-21 the rest of the way.
For the game, UC converted 52.9% of their field goal attempts, including 13 three-point shots at 40.6%, and made 92.3% (12 of 13) from the free throw line. Led by a dominating performance defensively in the second half, the Golden Eagles also held Concord to 42.1% field goal shooting in the contest. UC also controlled the glass as they owned the boards, 38-23.
Individually, Eddie Colbert tallied and eight rebounds to lead the way. Lamont McManus (15), Jeremiah Keene (11), and Shaunn Monroe (11) also contributed double digit points in the contest. In all, nine different UC players scored at least five points in the contest.
In addition, with the win over the Mountain Lions, head coach Dwaine Osborne moved into a tie for third place all time at UC with 160 total wins. He moved into a tie with Jayson Gee, who is now the associate head coach at NCAA I Western Carolina University.
