How it Happened

It took a minute and fifteen seconds, but the Golden Eagles opened their scoring with an electric one-handed slam from Shunta Wilson directly in front of the packed student section. Charleston continued to work well on offense from that point on. Eddie Colbert began to heat up with an unassisted layup as well as a three pointer to follow. D&E was forced to take a timeout as Charleston opened up the first half with a 14-5 run with 15:13 remaining. The timeout did not prove to be effective as Charleston continued to roll going up 22-7 with 12 minutes to play. While D&E attempted to find a way to get past the Golden Eagles, UC was rolling on offense, and they began to take charge and add on to their handsome lead making it 32-11. Lamont McManus, the veteran forward, received a tremendous roar from the crowd as he stuffed a shot and forced it out of bounds. A slam dunk was requested by the crowd and Eddie Colbert delivered with a two-handed jam making the lead 39-18. At the end of the half, Charleston found themselves with one of the highest first half tallies they've had all year as they lead 50-30.

Both teams came out of halftime with a slower pace, but the game remained entertaining. D&E worked a lot more ball movement inside the paint and managed to pick up some quick and easy layups to start the second half. Looking for his first pickpocket of the night, Riley Heatherington found an opportunity to slap the ball away leading to his quick layup on the other end making the score 67-43 with 12:56 remaining. D&E struggled holding on to the ball all night, but this was due to the tough defending from the Golden Eagles who had their eyes open all night waiting for the next takeaway. A factor that proved to be worthy in this matchup was the amount of offensive rebounds Charleston was able to gain, which allowed for many second chance opportunities. Charleston took home the soundly victory by a score of 92-76.
