JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The University of Charleston men's basketball team fell in their first contest of the year to Lock Haven University in a neutral site contest at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
The Basics
Location: University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown
Score: Charleston 63, Lock Haven 66
Records: UC (0-1, 0-0 MEC); LHU (1-0, 0-0 PSAC)
How It Happened
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring with a Jeremiah Keened three-pointer, which subsequently gave them their first and only lead of the game at 3-2. The Bald Eagles of Lock Haven responded with a 9-2 run over three minutes of game time to take a 13-5 lead. However, UC kept pushing, getting what was an eight-point lead, in favor of Lock Haven, to two points with a
Tyler Eberhart layup, making it 26-24, Lock Haven. Much like earlier in the half, Lock Haven responded with another scoring run to grow their lead. This time it was a 10-0 run to make it a 36-24 game at half.
Fifth-year senior
Tyler Eberhart responded from a rusty first half with 14 of his 21 points in the second half. He backed his effort with 11 rebounds, including four offensive boards in the UC comeback effort. Charleston came out of the half with more intentionality on offense and defense, getting what was once a 12-point Lock Haven lead down to three with just over 10 minutes to go. A couple of tough and-1 plays by
Jeremiah Keene (8PTS) and
Eddie Colbert III (15PTS) aided the team as they attempted to get over their halftime deficit.
With under a minute to play in regulation, the Golden Eagles were forced to foul, putting Lock Haven at the foul line. Lock Haven guard, Dymir Montague missed both of his chances at the charity stripe giving UC's men the ball with 34 seconds left down 66-63. On the ensuing possession, the Golden Eagles failed to get a shot off as the play was broken up. Maybe in part to good opposing defense, and a slick floor that had been plaguing both teams all game, as it took two UC players out as they were trying to execute what would be the final play in the game falling 66-63.
The Golden Eagles were led by
Keith Williams (21PTS, 11REB),
Eddie Colbert III (15PTS, 5REB), and
Tyler Eberhart (4PTS, 13REB).
