Charleston Picks Up a 72-70 Win Over the Wheeling Cardinals

Wheeling, W.Va. – Golden Eagles win close game against Wheeling to improve to 4-2 in Mountain East Conference play.
 
The Basics:

How it Happened:
Charleston started the game off hot going on a seven-point run before Wheeling found their first points of the night. Both teams traded points back and forth and the Cardinals were able to get within one point making the score 12-11 Charleston heading into the first media timeout.
 
The next ten minutes were all Charleston as they went on to outscore the Cardinals 27-6 improving their lead and making the score 39-17 at the last media timeout of the half. Wheeling went on to score eleven points before halftime, reducing the deficit to 44-28 Charleston as both teams entered the locker room.  
 
CJ Meredith led the Golden Eagles in the first half with eleven points followed by Tyler Eberhart's ten points and Eddie Colbert III's nine points.
 
Early in the second half Charleston had a nineteen-point advantage over Wheeling but as the media timeout was called the Cardinals had worked their way back now only trailing by ten. For the next five minutes both teams traded baskets back and forth making the score. 59-49 Charleston with about ten minutes left to play in the contest.
 
With 7:23 left in the game, Wheeling scored seven points in one minute to even the score at 63-63 with 6:24 left on the game clock. The teams went point for point for the next six minutes until with thirty-five seconds left on the clock, Tyler Eberhart hit a big-time three-pointer to give Charleston the two-point lead. Wheeling went on to score on a layup that tied the game once again at 70-70 with seventeen seconds left on the play clock. Charleston was forced to take a timeout to move the ball to their offensive end. The Golden Eagles let the clock run down to 1.1 seconds left before Jeremiah Keene hit a layup to give Charleston the two-point advantage. Wheeling called a timeout and tried to run one more play, but the half-court shot at the buzzer was denied by the rim.
 
Charleston defeated the Cardinals 72-70 and picked up their fourth Mountain East Conference win of the season.
 
Tyler Eberhart led the Golden Eagles with twenty points and seven rebounds in the game.

Charleston will travel to Bloomsburg for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, December 14th.
