WLAX: Golden Eagles Pick Up First Win of 2022 Against Lake Erie 15-1

CHARLESTON, W.Va – The Golden Eagle Women's Lacrosse team picked up their first win of their 2022 campaign on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 by defeating the visiting Lake Erie College Storm.

How it Happened

The visiting Lake Erie College storm played just their second game in three years and were outclassed by the seasoned Golden Eagles. Charleston tallied their first of 15 goals just eight minutes into the first period after 2021 All-Conference selection Tess Yuhas slotted a laser into the bottom right of the net to open the scoring. Charleston would notch two more goals in the quarter from Hannah Calvert (1:55) and Kayleigh Burns (0:27). At the end of the first it was Charleston on top 3-0 over the Storm.

Burns notched her eighth and ninth goals of the season after tallying two more goals in the second quarter. She was accompanied by Gabby Bianchi, Arianna Wallace, Hannah Calvert (2), and Gianni Blundell. Gianni Blundell and Hannah Calvert also added an assist to two goals in the quarter. At the sound of the halftime horn the Golden Eagles led 10-0 over the Storm of Lake Erie College.

Ariana Wallace opened the scoring in the third by tallying a goal at the 10:31 mark. Three more would be added by Meghan Smith (her first goal of her college career career), Gabby Bianchi, and Hannah Calvert. At the end of three Charleston led by a score of 14-0.

The fourth quarter saw goalkeeper Georgia Ryan allow her first goal of the contest by the Storm's Emma Rhoades. Sydney Verlinghieri closed the scoring at the 9:16 mark in the final quarter to make the score 15-1. Gianni Blundell was credited with her second assist of the evening.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action against Tiffin University on Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.
