MTEN: Golden Eagles Slice Through the Walsh Cavaliers 5-2

Charleston, W.Va.- The men's tennis team extended its record to 10-2 with a win over the Walsh Cavaliers.

The Basics:
Location: Shoenbaum Tennis Courts
Score: UC 5, WU 2
Records: UC 10-2, Walsh 9-6

How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start, taking 2nd and 3rd doubles by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 respectively. This secured the doubles point, giving Charleston a 1-0 lead heading into doubles.

The match was a side by side match with the women's team, so only the first four singles players took the court. John Giesberts at number two singles played a near perfect match, winning by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Marshall Dagostine provided the third point at number 3 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Charleston was looking for the clinching 4th point, but it was unclear where it would come from. Krish Patel was pushed to a third set. Dani Llorente was pushed to a third set. Jowan Rawson took the court at number 5 singles and began to go to work. Patel dropped the third set 7-5 and then Rawson won his match 6-2, 6-4 to provide the clinch point. Dani Llorente (#1 singles) went the distance against the number one player from Walsh. Both players cramped simultaneously at 5-4 in the third set and then again at 4-3 in the tie-breaker. Llorente was the survivor, winning by a final score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Man of the match goes to Jowan Rawson for his win at 3rd doubles and getting the clinch point at 5th singles. Captain John Giesberts said, "Jowan is no longer playing like a Freshman. He is playing with the confidence of an upper classman. I know we can count on him for wins."

Coach Sam Clarke said, "I was proud of how the lads competed. Walsh brought their best, but we were better on the day."

Up Next:
Next for the Golden Eagles is a home match versus Bluefield State College on Monday, March 28th. The match is a much anticipated rematch of last year's round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.
