HOW IT HAPPENED: MATCH 2
Charleston came out with more fire on Saturday afternoon taking the first set 25-21. In the set they made just two errors and finished with 16 kills on 24 attacks.
Â
They would come up just short from taking a commanding 2-0 set lead. Three straight Highlander errors late in the set gave Charleston some life at 25-24 and they would be just one point away from finishing as winners. However, NJIT recorded three straight kills to finish with a final score of 27-25.
Â
The lost set deflated the Golden Eagles and they would go on to drop set three 25-19. Midway through, NJIT collected five straight points to take a commanding 15-8 lead that was simply insurmountable for Charleston.
Â
Set four saw the Golden Eagles bounce back in a big way winning 25-21. In the winning set they bested the Highlanders in kills 15-8. The big swing came when NJIT took an 11-10 lead and Charleston proceeded to take 10 of the next 11 points to move the score to 20-12. From there they would finish the job with the final point of the set coming from a Highlander attack error.
Â
Charleston was poised to take the fifth set and steal a win off the No. 15 team in the country but they were unable to keep the ball in the lines. Charleston gave up eight of the first 11 points to the Highlanders via errors. The hole that was dug by the Golden Eagles inability to keep the ball in play resulted in NJIT finishing the set with four straight kills by Julian Meissner to end the match 15-9.
Jakub Osiewala ended the night tallying 18 kills on 24 swings with just one error for a match best .708 hitting percentage.Â
