How It Happened:

The Golden Eagles prepared to take on both inclement weather and the Missouri Western Griffons on Wednesday the 23rd. The Griffons went up early on the Eagles with 3 goals before a lightning delay pushed the game to Thursday evening.

On Thursday, the Eagles, with a small bench, looked to utilize the delay to rest and refresh.  The game resumed with 6 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter. The Griffons were able to put two more goals on the board before the quarter change.

In the second, Freshman Defender, Madison Sobolewski, was able to put the first goal on the board for the Eagles with a free position shot.  The Griffons answered back shortly after making the score 6-1 in favor of MWSU with 5 minutes remaining in the half.  The Eagles defense was able to hold the Griffons to just one goal in the second with the help of 4 big saves by Junior Goalie, Georgia Ryan. In the last seconds of the half, Sobolewski was able to put up another quick goal making the score 6-2 at the half.

In the second half, the Griffons continued putting pressure on the Eagle Defense.  They scored two quick back to back goals in the third quarter, making the score 8-2 in their favor.  The Griffon defense was also able to hold off the Charleston attackers with no shots allowed in the 3rd.  In the fourth, the Eagle defense allowed only 2 more goals by the Griffons, with Ryan making 4 saves.  Offensively, the Eagles were able to get more shots up, but were unable to get any past the Griffon goalkeeper.

Overall both goals scored by the Eagles were from freshman defender, Verlinghieri.  The Griffon defense kept pressure on season goal leader, Freshman, Sophia Conzone, but she was still able to put 5 shots up for the Eagles giving her 31 for the season.  Charleston's defense caused 13 turnovers, and Ryan made 9 saves for the Eagles.  Freshman, Sydney Verlinghieri lead defensively with 4 caused turnovers, and Junior Captain, Destiny Jackson was able to cause 3 turnovers in her first game back.  The Eagles showed progress defensively with 19 ground ball pickups.  The Griffons, who average 22 ground ball picks per game, were only able to win 9 ground balls.

The Eagles hit the road on Wednesday, March 30th for their first conference game against Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV.
