Game Recap: Baseball |

BSB: Golden Eagles Go 3-1 in Conference Series Against West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats

Game 1: UC 9, WVWC 4
Eric Chartier led the way on offense in game one, going 2-4 in the contest with a triple, an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Ethan Soderna got the nod on the bump of game one, working five strong innings with five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Senior Caleb Rush would enter in relief in the bottom half of the sixth inning, working two scoreless frames while striking out four Bobcats.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the first inning tallying six runs on two hits. They ran starting pitcher Baker out of the game before the end of the first as they worked five walks off the starter in the opening frame. The Bobcats responded in the bottom half with a two-run homerun from Radosevic.

The first run of the ballgame was scored on a double steal attempt by Kyle West and Jordan Bailey. Chartier brought the score to 3-0 after a single to left field, bringing Braxton Boddorf home. After two more walks from Giano Zuccaro and Drew Klaserner, the Golden Eagles plated three more runs.

Neither side scored the next two innings until RBI singles from West Virginia Wesleyan's Tilton and White. After four innings, UC led 7-4.

The Golden Eagles offense came to life once again in the top half of the fifth inning with a 2-run double from Tyler Dellerman, scoring Bailey and Costigan. The double would cap the scoring on both sides as UC would go on to win game one by a final score of 9-4.

Game 2: UC 15, WVWC 0
Drew Beckner and Zane Lattig combined to shutout the Bobcats in game two with 10 strikeouts between the two pitchers. Beckner went five strong innings, walking three, and striking out six Bobcats. Lattig pitched two innings in relieve and struck out four, walked two, and allowed two hits.

Charleston's offense stayed hot with 15 runs and 16 hits in game two. Boddorf started with a single to right field, scoring Dellerman. Chartier doubled for the second time of the day, scoring Boddorf. After a sacrifice-fly from William Glazebrook, the Golden Eagles led the Bobcats 3-0 after four innings.

The Golden Eagles notched five runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run blast by Dellerman. Jack Reisenweber scored in the sixth inning after a double to left center field from J.D. Armstrong. The seventh inning began with a Glazebrook single and pinch hitter Casey Finck came on for Pete Costigan. He would quickly blast a homerun to right field, scoring Glazebrook from first. The Golden Eagles reset and after back-to-back hits by Andre Martinez and Bryce Toussaint, Evan Ulrich launched a three-run homerun to center field to bring the final score to 15-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Game 3: UC 4, WVWC 1
Colt Webb took the bump for the first game of the Sunday doubleheader, where he continued to be a dominate force on the mound. The Bobcats were held to only one hit through the first five innings of work from the UC starter. Webb would eventually give up a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning, which would prove to be his last with a quick turnaround coming for next week's games. Webb would finish the outing with six innings, eight strikeouts, and only three hits and one earned run.

Game 3 of the weekend slate saw the Golden Eagles take an early lead with Dellerman scoring in the top half of the first inning. The score would remain at 1-0 until the top half of the fourth, where after back-to-back walks, and a hit by pitch would lead to a bases loaded situation. Boddorf would score on a sacrifice-fly produced by Clay Hale to push the score to 2-0. Some stingy defense by the Bobcats prevailed the rest of the inning and the Eagles were unable to push across another run. The top of the fifth would provide another opportunity for runs, and the Golden Eagles were able to produce another run, off 2 hits in the inning.

UC gave Webb an insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning, with Bailey scoring on a West groundout to first. Cole Peschl came into the bottom half of the inning to close the door on any sort of rally for the Bobcats. Peschl earned his third save the year, striking out one and allowing one hit in his single inning of work. Webb would secure the win for the Golden Eagles improving to 3-1 on the year, and the Golden Eagles would improve to 14-1 in conference play.

Game 4: UC 6. WVWC 8
Game 4 of the weekend saw the Golden Eagles get off to a hot start. Leadoff hitter Bailey started off the game with a leadoff bomb to right field and Chartier doubled to plate Boddorf and West, pushing the lead to 3-0 early on. Another run courtesy of a Glazebrook sacrifice fly increased the lead to 4-0 after the first inning.

Charleston's Owen MacNeil had the ball to start the second slate of the doubleheader. MacNeil's outing surrendered two early runs to the Bobcats. The pitching would struggle going into the second, with MacNeil eventually turning the ball over to the reliever Robby Shepherd and the UC bullpen. The Bobcats would strike for 5 runs in the bottom half of the frame, taking their first lead of the weekend at 7-4.

West and the entire UC offense looked to rally back and take the lead in the top half of the fourth inning, as a double and a sacrifice fly would show the Golden Eagles' resilience and make the game 6-7 in favor of the Bobcats.

Shepherd would pitch well out of the bullpen, eventually handing the ball off to Campbell Spradling in the bottom of the fifth. After a wild pitch, the Bobcats would increase their lead by another run, making it 8-6. This would turn out to be the final score, as any hopes of a comeback were stymied by the Bobcats pitching.

Charleston is now 14-2 in conference play, and still sit atop the South Division of the MEC. Davis & Elkins is up next for the Golden Eagles, as they return to the Welch Athletic Complex for a Friday and Saturday four game series.
