Men's Volleyball Takes a Set From No. 2 Penn State But Falls in Four Sets

Charleston, W.Va – The University of Charleston Men's volleyball team hosted top of the EIVA conference, Penn State University Friday night. Both teams were currently looking to extend their winning streaks, but the Golden Eagles fell to the Nittany Lions three sets to one. Penn State extended their winning streak to 19 games as they closed out their regular season.

The Basics
Location:
Russell and Martha Wehrle Innovation Center – Charleston, W. Va
Score: UC 1 – PSU 3
Records: Charleston (8 – 14, 4 – 11 EIVA), Penn State (23 – 3, 16 – 0 EIVA)

How it Happened
The first set began with high intensity from both the fans and players of each teams. Loud cheering from students, players, and the band playing caused for a rowdy atmosphere in the set. The Golden Eagles battled with the Nittany Lions all set, but ended up falling short by a score of 25 – 18 after some great hitting from the Penn State (.467). Ismael Sneed, who is 4th in kills for the Golden Eagles, collected two kills in the set to put his season tally at 100.

The second set saw the same high intensity as the first set. The Golden Eagles again rallied with the Nittany Lions, but fell short after conceding five hitting errors in the set. Jake Vorburger provided five of his thirteen kills in the set, but ultimately was not enough. Penn State took the second set by a score of 25 – 21.

The third set struck hope in the Golden Eagle faithful as Charleston went on to dominate the set. UC opened the set by winning eight of the first ten points and continued to soar as Lachlan Gray (led team with 14) provided the team with several key kills. Diego Villafane had a key block for the Golden Eagles that pushed them closer to taking the set. After the block, Charleston won five straight points to close the set by a score of 25 – 15.

Attacking and service errors were the downfall for the Golden Eagles all night, but the fourth set saw the most errors from the Golden Eagles. Charleston totaled nine attacking errors in the set, which was half the amount they had for the entire match (18). The Nittany Lions bounced back from dropping the third set and dominated the last set. During the middle of the set, Penn State won nine points in a row and continued this run to close out the set by a score of 25 – 12.

The Golden Eagles move to 0 – 15 all time versus the Nittany Lions and dropped both of the regular season matchups.
