BECKLEY, W.Va- The Golden Eagle Baseball Team picked up a win in the opening round of the Mountain East Conference Baseball tournament after defeating the Notre Dame College Falcons on Thursday. They notched 13 hits, walked seven times and stuck out only three times over seven innings in the Mercy Rule win over the Falcons.
How it Happened
Colt Webb got the nod as the game one starter for Charleston in the Tournament. The First Team All-MEC selection worked out of jams early in the contest that allowed the offense to explode in the middle innings. Webb was lights out in the latter part of the contest, not allowing a baserunner in his last three innings of work.
Charleston struck first in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a Falcon error by the shortstop that allowed
Drew Klaserner to come around to score. The Golden Eagles would load the bases in the bottom of the 2
nd and the bottom of the 3
rd but came up away with just one run. The Falcons forced a double play out of centerfielder
Giano Zuccaro to end the threat in the third and keep the score 1-0. Charleston plated one run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from
Braxton Boddorf bringing the score to 2-0.
The bulk of the scoring came from the 8-run 5
th inning. In the inning
Pete Costigan brought home the first run of the inning on a seed that hit off the base of the wall and scored
Klaserner from second base. Later in the inning,
Boddorf smoked a 2-run double to right field that scored
Jordan Bailey and
Zuccaro while bringing the score to 6-0.
Costigan would cap the scoring with a 2-out 2-RBI single to right field that scored
McCallister and
Chartier. A sac fly by
Dellerman and a RBI groundout by Boddorf ended the scoring for UC in the contest as they took a 12-0 lead in the bottom of the 6
th.
Webb continued to work efficiently, and he finished his afternoon tossing a 7 inning shutout as the Golden Eagles would go on to run-rule the Falcons. Webb allowed just six hits and struck out six in his outing.
Boddorf finished the afternoon tallying four RBI, three hits, and one run scored. Costigan went 2-3 with two singles, a walk, and three RBI. Klaserner, Bailey, and Andre Martinez scored two runs each in the game. Five different Golden Eagles tallied multiple hits as the 7-9 hitters in the starting lineup notched hits.
Up next, Charleston will face off against the loser of Concord and Fairmont State tomorrow 3:30 p.m. at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, WV.
