BECKLEY, W.Va- The Golden Eagle Baseball team continued their Mountain East Tournament run by pounding out 14 hits and scoring 9 runs en route to a win over the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State.
Â
How it Happened
Â
Charleston wasted no time putting up runs on Friday afternoon, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.
Brayden McCallister brought home a run on a single to the shortstop before
Drew Klaserner plated the second on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Â
Klaserner continues to impress in the run as he picked up two more hits in the game which brings his tournament total to four. In addition, he has added four runs and three RBI in just two games.
Â
Even more impressive than Klaserner has been senior,
Costigan. Against Fairmont Costigan would notch three hits, which included two doubles, and scored three runs. In the tournament he is 5-8 with 2 doubles, 5 runs, 3 RBI.
Â
Offense has been consistent so far this tournament, scoring a combined 21 runs in two games. For the second consecutive day, 7 of the 9 starters in the lineup tallied hits in the game. They would tack on two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth Klaserner and Costigan were brought home after a RBI groundout by
Giano Zuccaro and then a double by Andre Martinez into the right centerfield gap.
Â
In the fifth the combo of Costigan and Klaserner would strike again as they both scored on an Andre Martinez single and a throwing error by the shortstop.
Â
Starting pitcher
Ethan Soderna was masterful on the bump as he fanned 8 hitters in seven innings of work without allowing a run. He walked just three and forced two double plays in his outing. He was relieved in the bottom of the 8
th inning by
Campbell Spradling who couldn't record an out. He was followed by Robby Shepherd, who would close the game, allowing 2 runs with one being earned.
Â
Five UC hitters would tally multiple hit games as Charleston rolled to a 9-3 win in nine innings.
Clay Haleadded a pinch hit RBI double in the 9
th.
Dellerman also added an RBI single in the 9
th to put the game out of reach.
Â
Up next, Charleston will face off against the winner of Concord and Frostburg State at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of that game will head to the MEC Championship game on Sunday and will need just one win to win the MEC Tournament Title.
