Men’s Tennis tops Topper to capture back to back MEC Championships

Charleston, W.Va.- Golden Eagles capture MEC Tournament Title with the defeat of West Liberty on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics:
Location: Charleston Tennis Club
Score: UC 4, WLU 1
Records: UC 21-2, West Liberty 13-8

How it Happened:
The doubles point was highly contested. The number one duo of Dagostine / Giesberts made quick work of the West Liberty Hilltoppers number one team by a score of 6-2. The Toppers struck next with a 6-3 win at 3rd doubles. The doubles point came down to number 2 doubles. Charleston was trailing 5-2 and things didn't look, but Patel and Llorente were able to turn it around and win the set 7-6 in a tie-breaker.

As the Golden Eagles took the court, they knew they needed 3 more points to win the match. Krish Patel (#3) and John Giesberts (#2) went right to work, both winning in straight sets. West Liberty took number 6 single. This left Charleston looking to pick up one additional point. It was Freshman, Jowan Rawson, who provided the clinch point, giving the Charleston the 4-1 win and the 2022 conference championship. Of the win, Rawson said, "It was great to win the match for my team. I knew they were behind me all the way."

Of the championship, Coach Matt Santen said, "This was a great team win. We were able to win back to back championships because the program is built on the commitment of everyone, from the trainers to Dr. Stevens (Athletic Director) to Dr. Roth (President of UC) to Assistant Coach Sam Clarke. I am honored to lead this team to a second championship on the foundation of so many at the University of Charleston."

Man of the match is shared by Krish Patel (clinched the doubles point and gave Charleston its first singles point) and John Giesberts, who only lost a total of 8 games on the day.
