Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Golden Eagle Baseball team fell to Millersville in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional on Thursday morning by a final score of 9-4.
Owen MacNeil got the nod on the mound for the Golden Eagles and struggled early in his outing. In the first three innings he allowed three earned runs. In the second the Marauders scored two runs after a squeeze bunt and then a sacrifice fly. In the third Millersville took a 3-0 lead after a solo home run to left field by Thomas Caufield. He would settle down later in his outing and tossed the last three innings scoreless. He would end his day with 6.0 innings pitched, two strikeouts and allowed four earned runs.
The offense struggled to produce runs off the Marauder starting pitcher Ben Wilchacky. They would finally get to Wilchacky in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a solo home run by Pete Costigan. They would add another run on a bases loaded walk to Braxton Boddorf, however, they left the bases loaded and failed to add another crucial run that would have tied the game at six in the top half of the inning.
The resilient Millersville offense blasted another home run that came once again by Thomas Caufield. It would be his second of the day and extended the Marauder lead to 6-2 after the seventh inning.
Charleston fought back again in the eighth, scoring a run on an RBI-double by pinch hitter Evan Ulrich. However, once again, Charleston would strand runners at second and third in a big moment that could have swayed the momentum in favor of the Golden Eagles.
The relentless offense from the No. 2 seeded Marauders was relentless, however. They tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-3 lead. Tyler Dellerman would add his 13
th home run of the season in the top half of the 9
th inning to cut the lead to 9-4 but it would not be enough as Millersville took the first round matchup by five.
Tyler Dellerman broke the single season record for home runs with his 9
th inning home run. The record has stood since 1986, and Dellerman continues to impress in his record breaking season.
Campbell Spradling worked 1.1 innings in the game, allowing four earned runs. Daniel Kanagy finished the game for the Golden Eagles, tossing 0.2 innings while giving up one run.
Up next, Charleston will face off against Gannon on Saturday in an elimination game at Cooper Park that will be played at 11 a.m.
