Baseball Closes Regular Season with a Sweep of West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Golden Eagle Baseball team finished the regular season with a sweep of host and rival West Virginia State on Monday afternoon. In the two games Charleston combined for 33 runs and tallied 29 hits.

Game One

Owen MacNeil got the nod on the bump in game one and had one of his best performances of the year. He worked 6.0 innings while striking out 10, and walking only one. He threw just 76 pitches and allowed one hit without giving up a run. It marks his second straight start with double-digit strikeouts and the fifth time that he has thrown five or more innings in a start. MacNeil improved his record to 6-2 on the season and brought his season strikeout total to 48.

Eric Chartierled the way on offense going 2-2 with a three-run blast to right field that opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. He also added a double and two walks in the effort.

Braxton Boddorf had a solid day at the plate in game one as well going 2-4 with two runs scored and a walk.

The majority of damage was done in the fifth and sixth innings where Charleston scored five and four runs respectively. Drew Klaserner singled home two runs in the fifth and was quickly brought home after another RBI single by Giano Zuccaro. Jordan Bailey plated Zuccaroon an RBI single of his own later in the inning.

In the sixth Pete Costigan plated Chartier to open the rally in the sixth. After a sacrifice fly by Andre Martinez, Tyler Dellerman added to his team leading RBI total, smoking a ball to left field that plated Zuccaro and Costigan.

Evan Ulrich belted his third home run of the season on a pinch hit blast to right field that capped the scoring at 14. Daniel Kanagy slammed the door in the bottom of the 7th striking out one and surrendering one walk. UC would go on to take game one 14-0 on the back of 12 hits.

Game 2

The pitching staff struggled in game two as Drew Beckner was pulled in just the second inning after giving up 5 runs. However, Zane Lattig would come and have a solid outing before giving way to Dane Sykes and Caleb Rush in the 6th and 7th innings.

Chartier opened the scoring once again in the second game after cranking a 2-run bomb to left field in the first inning. Clay Hale added a home run in the top half of the second inning as well. It would mark his first long ball of the season and would pu the Golden Eagles up 4-0 at the time.

The Golden Eagles would explode in the fourth inning putting up ten runs in their half of the frame. They tallied 10 runs on six hits and one error. UC brought nine batters to the plate in the inning before recording an out. The scoring was highlighted by a Costigan two run double, a Boddorf no doubter to right, and a Evan Ulrich sacrifice fly that scored three runs after it was dropped in centerfield.

UC would bring home four more runs home next inning that was highlighted by Griffin Adkins absolute bomb to left field, the first of his career. Drew Klaserner also had an RBI double in the frame.

Zane Lattig was credited with the win on the mound after going 3.2 innings, giving up one run, striking out five and walking just one.

Every starter except one recorded a hit in the game as Charleston would go on to take a 19-9 victory over the Yellow Jackets. Boddorf was 4-5 with 3 runs, 3 RBI, and a stolen base. Costigan was 2-3 with 2 RBI, 3 runs scored, a double and a walk. Hale was 3-4 with a 2-run home run, 2 runs and a walk. Chartier was 2-3 with a 2-run home run, 3 RBI, and 2 runs.

Up next, the Golden Eagles will play in the MEC tournament in Beckley, WV at Linda K. Epling Stadium against the #3 seed from the MEC North Division on Thursday, May 12.
