How it Happened
Charleston's defense played a very solid first quarter against Frostburg's hard-nosed offensive approach. Frostburg was forced to punt on their opening possession, but a good boot from Dayne Koontz would pin the Golden Eagles at the one-yard line. The Golden Eagles were able to dig their way out of dangerous territory, but were unable to march the long 99 yards and punted the ball back to the Bobcats.
Frostburg's first score of the day came from a Graham Walker rushing touchdown from eight yards out to take the early 7-0 advantage, but Walker appeared shaken up on the play and would see little action the rest of the game.
On Frostburg's next possession, Charleston's Roderick Webb was able to jar the ball lose on an open field tackle that would give the Golden Eagles possession in Bobcat territory. Charleston's drive to the endzone looked promising, but was snuffed out by Wylan Harich as he intercepted Davis Black's endzone shot at the goal line and gave the Bobcats the ball back.
The Bobcats would settle for a Dayne Koontz field goal and would grow the lead to 10-0.
Field position was going to be a huge factor in this matchup, and Charleston's defense was to thank for their first points of the day after they forced a three-and-out and gave them the ball inside the redzone for their first play of the drive. The actual points came from quarterback Davis Black as he jogged into the promise land from a yard out to make it 7-10 with 5:25 remaining in the half.
The Golden Eagles would force yet another three-and-out deep in Frostburg territory and set their offense up for their second scoring drive of the day. Once again, Black, who should have possibly considered bringing his track spikes for this one, ran the ball in from 31 yards out to give Charleston the 14-10 lead.
Charleston had all the momentum after the score and it looked as though the Bobcats would have to regroup at halftime, but Frostburg would take the lead back just before the break on a Jordan Marcucci receiving touchdown to take the 17-14 lead going into half.
After the break, Charleston would take the ball down the field on their opening possession, but Frostburg interrupted the drive with another interception; this one coming from AJ Felton off a tipped pass.
Frostburg moved down the field efficiently but was held up inside the five-yard line and Koontz knocked home another three points to make it 20-14.
Charleston, eager for the lead, would answer on the second play of their next drive on a 54-yard reception by Marquan Herron that would go all the way to the house putting Charleston on top 21-20.
As these back-and-forth matchups go, Frostburg would score on the next possession led by a 70-yard run from Sean Aaron that ended with a receiving score from Marcucci once more to make it 21-27.
In the fourth quarter, Marcucci would add on another score after a 73-yard reception to extend the Bobcat lead to 21-34.
With Charleston down by two possessions, big plays were needed to stay in the game, and Colby Cooper would provide one as he went up and caught a 25-yard reception in the corner of the endzone to get within a score of Frostburg at 28-34.
Charleston would deliver on defense forcing a missed field goal which giving their offense the ball back with three timeouts and 2:19 on the clock to win the game with a score and an extra point.
On the first play of the last-chance drive, Black was picked off by Wylan Harich once again, This would be everything Frostburg would need to put the game to rest with a 34-28 win.
