Golden Eagles Undefeated at King University Tri-Match

BRISTOL, Tenn.- University of Charleston's Women's Volleyball went undefeated at the King University Tri-Match, as they defeated Young Harris College and King University in straight sets on Saturday. 

The Basics:
Location: Bristol, TN
Score: 3-0 UCWV (25-17, 25-21, 25-19), 3-0 UCWV (25-21, 25-16, 25-19)
Records: UCWV (12-6, 2-1 MEC), YHC (7-9, 4-3 CC), King University (3-9, 1-3 CC)

How it Happened:
Sage Bearnson led the Golden Eagles' offense to straight set victories over Young Harris and King University as she pounded in 29 kills on the day. Emma Shepherd and Riley Hoff were also effective on the court, as they both had 15 kills to the name. Reagan McLean and Hoff took control of Charleston's defense with McLean collecting five blocks and Hoff collecting 24 digs. 

The Golden Eagles dominated in game one against Young Harris. Set one was back-and-forth until Charleston jumped ahead 20-12 on a 7-point service run by Pia Selke and kills by McLean, Shepherd, and Bearnson. UC only allowed the Mountain Lions to score one more point before they went on to win the set 25-13.

Young Harris and Charleston traded sideouts in set two, but the Golden Eagles jolted ahead 11-6 on three service aces by Shepherd and an attack error by the Mountain Lions. Charleston won the second frame 25-16.

Like the first two frames, UC took control in the third set to win 25-19, which secured the Golden Eagles a straight set victory over the Mountain Lions. Bearnson went on a 5-point service to give Charleston a 13-8 advantage in the third set, which prompted kills from Shepherd, Hoff and Kate Strong

Set one of game two was the closest the Tornandos got to winning a set, as Charleston defeated them 25-21 in set one, 25-16 in set two and 25-19 in the final set. King University had the advantage in set one, but the Golden Eagles climbed their way back to tie it at 15 on another Bearnson service run and kills by Hoff and Shepherd. The set was back-and-forth until Charleston pulled ahead with Selke in the driver's seat. Charleston defeated the Tornados 25-21 on a kill by Shepherd and three more errors by King University.

Charleston jolted to a quick 4-0 lead in the second frame of the game and held the lead all the way through. Hoff served the first four points of the game with help from Bearnson and Selke. The Golden Eagles secured the 25-16 second set win on a kill by Hoff. 

Charleston defeated King University 25-19 in the third set to give them their second victory of the day. Although the Tornados picked up the first two points of the set, the Golden Eagles pulled ahead on another 6-point Selke service run where she went on to collect three aces. Charleston won the set with kills from Selke, Bearnson and Shepherd.

Up Next:
Charleston will head to Elkins, West Virginia on Tuesday October 3 to face conference foe Davis & Elkins College(1-13, 0-2 MEC) at 7pm.
