How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles put on a stellar defensive performance against the Senators, as they totaled 47 digs in three sets while holding D&E to a .046 hitting percentage. Freshman libero Chloe Fortner was on fire, collecting 15 of the team's 47 digs. Sage Bearnson led the offense with 15 kills in 24 attemps, while freshman Riley Hoff followed closely behind with 12 kills in 27 attempts.
Sophomore Abby Avila started the first set off strong for UC with a service ace, but both teams traded sideouts until Charleston pulled ahead 10-4 on a 4-point service run and a kill from Bearnson and additional kills by Emma Shepherd and Hoff. The Golden Eagles held the lead until the very end to give them a 25-17 set one victory over the Senators.
Davis & Elkins snagged the first two points in the second frame on a kill and an attack error by the Golden Eagles, but Charleston evened the score at two on a kill by Hoff and a Senator attack error. The teams continued to trade sideouts until UC took a 11-6 lead on another service run and two aces by Bearnson and errors by the Senators. From there, Charleston put up a dominating 19-13 lead over D&E, but the Senators put their name back in the mix after collecting two service aces to cut the lead to three. Despite their efforts, the Senators were defeated 25-20 in the second set of the night to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into set three.
Like set two, D&E secured the first two points of the set on a kill and a Golden Eagle attack error. The frame went back and forth, but a 5-point service run by Hoff put Charleston in front 16-11. UC was leading 20-14, but the Senators cut the lead to two on three straight kills and a service ace. Their comeback fell short though, as Charleston defeated Davis & Elkins 25-20 to secure the 3-0 win.
