Charleston Captures Straight Set Win Against Salem

CHARLESTON, W.Va.—UC Women's Volleyball defeats Salem University (5-15) in straight sets to improve to 17-7 on the season.

The Basics:
Location: Charleston, WV
Score: 3-0 UCWV (25-7 UCWV, 25-19 UCWV, 25-14 UCWV)

How it Happened:
Charleston came out blazing in set one, as they captured the first five points of the game on Salem errors and a kill by Mai-Lani Hernandez. The Tigers managed to put a point of their own on the board, but the Golden Eagles quickly jumped ahead 8-1 with kills by Reagan McLean, Sage Bearnson and Maria Hernandez. Charleston continued to pour it on to secure the first set victory with service aces by Bearnson and Chloe Fortner and kills by Riley Hoff, Emma Shepherd, Najla Bray and Kalista Milne. UC's defense allowed Salem to score just seven points in the first frame.

Set two was a closer battle, but Charleston went on to defeat Salem 25-19. The frame started off with a kill by Hernandez and a kill by Hoff to put UC ahead 2-0. Unlike the previous set, both teams ended up trading sideouts until Charleston pulled ahead 15-8 on Salem errors and kills by Shepherd, Hernandez, Bearnson and Kate Strong. The Golden Eagles held the lead all the way through to give them their second win of the night.

The Golden Eagles kept the momentum going into the final frame of the day, picking up five straight points on three errors by the Tigers, a service ace by Hoff and two kills by Hernandez. Salem secured the next two points on a kill and a Golden Eagle error, but Charleston's offense kept chugging ahead to give them the 25-14 third set victory and their seventeenth win of the season.

Sage Bearnson led the Golden Eagles offense with a total of nine kills and two service aces, while Chloe Fortner and Mai-Lani Hernandez led the defense with Fortner collecting 15 digs and Hernandez collecting six blocks.
