Golden Eagles Triumphant Over Wesleyan Bobcats in Three

CHARLESTON, W.Va.— For the second time this season, UC Women's Volleyball defeats West Virginia Wesleyan University (5-16, 1-10 MEC) in straight sets to improve to 19-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

The Basics:
Location: Buckhannon, WV
Score: 3-0 UCWV (25-10 UCWV, 25-14 UCWV, 25-22 UCWV)

How it Happened:
Today, the Golden Eagles hit the road and dominated the Bobcats, winning 25-10 in set one, 25-14 in set two and 25-22 in set three to give them the straight set victory. Set one seemed like it was going to be a close matchup, but Charleston picked up steam, pulling ahead 13-8 on Wesleyan errors, a service ace by Maria Hernandez and kills by Emma Shepherd, Patrycja Majos, Reagan McLean and Sage Bearnson. Wesleyan managed to sneak a kill in, however, Pia Selke strung along a five-point service run to give them a 19-9 advantage over the Bobcats. Charleston went on to win the set on a kill by Bearnson.

The Golden Eagles took charge in the second frame, as they jumped to a quick 7-2 lead on McLean and Selke kills, while also capitalizing on Bobcat errors. The Golden Eagles continued to add to the score board with two straight service aces by Suzan Agterberg and kills by Bearnson and Shepherd. Fifth year Mai-Lani Hernandez sealed the 25-14 second set victory with a kill.

Charleston continued to play well throughout the final frame, but Wesleyan did not go down without a fight. Like the second set, the Golden Eagles established an early 13-4 lead with a seven-point service run by Agterberg, service aces by Majos and Agterberg and kills by Maria Hernandez, Bearnson and Shepherd. Charleston continued to lead the set, but Wesleyan managed to cut the lead to just two points, as they collected five straight on three kills and a Golden Eagle error. UC won the set 25-22 on a service error by the Bobcats.
