CHARLESTON, W. Va.—Just like earlier in the season, University of Charleston Women's Volleyball downs Concord University (15-12, 5-7 MEC) in straight sets to improve to 21-8 in regular season play and 10-3 in conference play.
The Basics:
Location: Athens, W. Va.
Score: 3-0 UCWV (25-19 UCWV, 25-19 UCWV, 25-19 UCWV)
How it Happened:
The Concord Mountain Lions snagged the first point in set one, but the Golden Eagles responded by winning 12 of the 13 following serves on CU errors, two service aces by Pia Selke and kills by Reagan McLean, Sage Bearnson and Emma Shepherd. With the score at 13-3, Concord shaved the lead down to just three points, but that is the closest they were able to get before the momentum began swinging in Charleston's direction again. UC closed out the 25-19 set victory on more errors by the Mountain Lions and more kills by Riley Hoff, McLean and Bearnson.
The second frame started out similarly to the first, except this time the Golden Eagles put the first point on the board. They went on to jump to an early 10-4 lead, as they kept pounding in kills by McLean and Bearnson and capitalizing on Mountain Lion errors. Charleston led throughout the entire set, defeating Concord again 25-19.
Set three was a closer matchup, but the Golden Eagles still had the upper hand throughout the frame. CU errors, a service ace by Hoff and kills by McLean and Selke gave the Golden Eagles an early 5-1 advantage, but the Mountain Lions knotted it up at 6 on three kills, two service aces and a service error by Charleston. This did not slow UC down though, as they went on to defeat the Mountain Lions 25-21 to give them their second straight set victory over Concord this season.
Sage Bearnson led the team's offense with 11 kills, while Reagan McLean led the team's defense with a total of six blocks. Abby Avila, Riley Hoff and Chloe Fortner also played great defensively, as Fortner had eight digs while Avila and Hoff had nine. Senior Maria Hernandez led the team in assists with a total of 21.
