Golden Eagles Down Mountain Lions 81-74

ATHENS, W. Va. — University of Charleston Men's Basketball defeats Concord University (3-1, 0-1 MEC) 81-74 in their first conference match up of the season to improve to 2-1 overall. Charleston's bench propelled the Golden Eagles past Concord, as they out shot the Mountain Lions 28-10 with help from CJ Meredith (15 points, 2-4 from three), Ziri Blackwood (11 points, 2 steals, 3-5 from three) and Obinna Ugwuakazi (2 points, 1 steal, 4 rebounds).

How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles trailed the Mountain Lions 14-12 going into the first media timeout, but UC went on to even the score at 22 on layups by Tyler Eberhart and Meredith, a three-pointer by Blackwood and a free throw by Keaton Turner. Charleston and Concord traded buckets until a steal by Ugwuakazi sparked a six point run capped off with a Dwaine Jones layup to give the Golden Eagles a 31-26 advantage over the Mountain Lions. Charleston concluded the half leading 39-30.

Charleston continued to pour it on in the second half, and Concord could not catch up. Eberhart started it off with a layup, followed by a turner three-pointer to increase their lead to 44-32. The Mountain Lions eventually cut the lead to five to make the score 47-42, but the Golden Eagles broke it open on layups by Eberhart and Ugwuakazi and a Jones three-pointer. Charleston continued to apply pressure through the rest of the half with three-pointers by Meredith, Barker, Blackwood, and Eddie Colbert III. UC went on to win 81-74.

Tyler Eberhart led the Golden Eagles offense with 19 points and a field goal percentage of .615, while Dwaine Jones led the defense with a steal, a block and six rebounds.

University of Charleston Men's Basketball will host Glenville State University on November 21 in the Wehrle Innovation Center. The game will start at 7:30pm, following the women versus Glenville game at 5:30pm.
