Charleston Begins Post-Season Play in MEC Semifinal

Charleston, W. Va – Daniel Smee, in his fourth season at the helm of the University of Charleston, will have his squad prepped and ready to begin their post-season play. With two stars above their logo, this team has clearly held themselves to as high as the bar goes on the scale. Their post-season play begins this Wednesday at home in the Mountain East Conference Semifinal round.

Throughout the season, the Golden Eagles have dominated the league as they have done for nearly a decade, holding opponents to just six goals through 17 games while scoring 65 goals and averaging nearly four scores per game. Joao Belmudes leads the team with 10 goals and three assists with 19 shots on goal. In 14 games, veteran goalkeeper Marc Torrado has put up 27 saves with his 90% save percentage and has even contributed an assist on the year with a large blast up field to his strikers.

The Golden Eagles will face the Concord Mountain Lions this Wednesday in the semifinal round at the Welch Athletic Complex. In the previous two meetings, the Charleston has gotten the better of Concord with two wins by combined scores of 7-1, with the last match being decided in a 5-0 victory for the Golden Eagles. The Mountain Lions hold a record of 8-4-7 (4-3-7 MEC) with a high-powered defense allowing an average of just one goal throughout their season. They are led offensively by Tomas Kelly with his seven goals and four assists on the year. Goalkeeper Keegan Grant has faced 278 total shots this year and has deflected 93, putting up a save percentage of 83%.

The Golden Eagles are currently ranked as the 2nd seed in the NCAA Super-Region One rankings, sitting behind Franklin Pierce, the reigning NCAA DII National Champions. The stakes are high in each contest for the Golden Eagles, but they have shown time and time again that they have what it takes to win it all.

Kickoff against the Mountain Lions is set for Wednesday November 8th at 7:30 PM.
