Game 1: Charleston 3, Bloomsburg 2
After dropping three straight games to open the season against nationally ranked Wingate University, Robbie Britt's Golden Eagles were in desperate need of a victory at home.
Ethan Soderna would get the start on the hill in game one. He was pulled in the top of the 4
th giving up just one hit, but surrendering two earned runs and on four walks. He handed the ball to
Cole Peschl who would end up getting the win, working 3.2 innings in relief without allowing a run.
The Huskies struck first in the fourth inning scoring two runs in the frame. Charleston answered back with two of their own in the bottom.
AJ Karosas, who got the start at shortstop, tripled home Andre Martinez and would score after being brought home on a sacrifice fly by
JD Armstrong.
Bats went quiet on both sides for the next few innings. Charleston went down in order in both the 5
th and 6
th innings. Bloomsburg threatened in the 6
th putting a runner on second with one away but
Peschl worked his way out of the jam, setting the stage for some late game magic by the Golden Eagles.
Armstrong led off the bottom of the 7
th frame, dunking a single into right center. Pinch runner
Griffin Adkins came on to pinch run and was promptly moved to second on a well executed sacrifice bunt by
Brayden McCallister.
Tyler Dellerman stepped up to the dish and squeezed a ball through the left side of the infield. Adkins, who was held up slightly to ensure the ball got past the diving shortstop was sent home and slid in safely just ahead of the throw from the outfield.
It would end Charleston's three game skid and would mark the first win of the season, an important victory over in region opponent Bloomsburg.
Game 2: Charleston 5, Bloomsburg 3
Dane Sykes got the nod in game two and worked a respectable 5.0+ innings, allowing seven hits, striking out seven and walking two during his outing.
The big story in game two was the dominance from the Charleston bullpen. Reliever
Zane Lattig entered the game in the 6
th, inheriting a runner from Sykes, but the junior right hander worked out of the jam without allowing the run to score.
Andrew Gormley, who struggled against Wingate worked out of a jam in the 7
th without allowing a run to score. Gormley would get credit for the win after Charleston took the lead in the bottom of the 7
th frame. He was proceeded by
Robby Shepherd and the junior shut the door on game two working two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and collecting three strikeouts.
Similar to the first game, UC went down early, surrendering a run in the opening frame. They responded with three runs in the home half of the second, all runs being produced with two outs. After back-to-back walks by
Giano Zuccaro and Armstrong,
Hector Carreon-Herrara stung a double in the gap to score Zuccaro from second. Armstrong would score on a rare balk before
Andre Martinez singled home Herrera a few pitches later.
The Huskies added a run in the 5
th and 6
th to knot the score at three, before UC overtook them in the bottom of the 7
th.
Drew Klaserner scored one run on a sacrifice fly in the frame and Martinez singled home a big insurance run with two outs in the 8
th.
Charleston will be back in action on Sunday, playing one nine inning game at 1:00 pm at the Welch Athletic Complex.
