Wingate, N.C. - Charleston Baseball has moved their opening series against Wingate University to February 9. Originally scheduled to be a true weekend series with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday, weather has pushed the start time up to 6:00 pm on Thursday. Games will be played Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with no game on Friday due to the threat of rain.

Charleston Preview
 
The Golden Eagles were tabbed favorites in the Mountain East Conference Preseason poll last week. Last season, Charleston had a record of 40-18 overall while going 29-8 in conference play. They would make it as far as the NCAA Atlantic Region II championship before falling 6-3 to East Stroudsburg in the winner takes all game.
 
UC returns a few key offensive pieces this season. Tyler Dellerman, who was named NCBWA Third Team All-American in the latest preseason poll, will be at the heart of the lineup this year for UC. Dellerman clubbed 13 home runs, slashed .393/.486/.709 with 19 doubles and 67 RBI earning him a spot on the MEC First Team in 2022.
 
First Baseman Kyle West returns to action as well. The sophomore from Hedgesville, WV was sidelined at the end of last year after suffering an injury but will make his return on Thursday evening. He slashed .344/.420/.675 with 8 home runs, 14 doubles, and 42 RBI while starting in 44 games last season. 
 
Of the 12 games played against the Bulldogs over the last four seasons, the Golden Eagles have won just one of those contests, a 2-1 victory on 2/15/2020. 
 
The Opponent
 
Wingate ranks #15 in the country in the latest preseason poll from the NCBWA. They were picked favorites in the SAC preseason baseball poll after receiving 12 first place votes. The 2021 national championship winning Bulldogs also had 11 All-SAC preseason selections. They finished 2022 with a 48-10 overall record going 21-2 in the SAC and hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time in program history. Wingate lost their first series of the season dropping two out of three to Florida Tech last weekend.
