Golden Eagles Take Game One Over Pitt-Johnstown in Walk-Off Fashion

Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagle Baseball team walked off against Pitt Johnstown on Friday afternoon. For the second time this season it was Tyler Dellerman who delivered the game winning RBI to walk it off in extras.

With first pitch set for 3 pm, Ethan Soderna was given the ball to start the game. The grad student worked 4.0 innings allowing only one earned run, striking out four and walking three.

The Mountain Cats of Pitt Johnstown got on the board first in the top of the 3rd. Mario Disso singled home Asher Corl to open the scoring.

UC scored their first run on a solo home run from JD Armstrong. It would mark the first long ball of his career and knotted the score at one in the 4th. Armstrong had another hit, an infield single that he legged out in the bottom of the 8th inning. Unfortunately he would be forced to exit on the play after hitting first awkwardly and going down with an apparent knee injury.

After falling behind again in the 6th UC would answer once again with who other than Kyle West. The sophomore destroyed his 4th home run of the year, a 450+ ft. tank that tied the score at two.

Cody Godbold relieved Soderna in the 5th inning. He worked a solid 3.1 innings with one earned, four hits and two strikeouts.

He gave way to Tad Dean in the 8th. The 6'1" right hander entered with the bases loaded in the inning and one out and worked his way out of the jam forcing two consecutive strikeouts to stifle the Mountain Cat threat.

In the 10th UPJ scratched across two runs on two hits and two Charleston errors in the frame. Peschl limited the damage to just two getting out of a bases loaded situation to keep the score at 4-2.

The Golden Eagles willed across two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at four once again. West, for the second time in the game, came through with a clutch at bat, tripling home Dellerman for the first run. He came home on a sac fly by pinch hitter Will Glazebrook, tying the score again.

After a scoreless top of the 11th, UC ended plated a run in the 11th to win the ball game in extras for the second time this year. After loading the bases with one out, Dellerman stepped to the plate to deliver the winner. On a 1-1 count the veteran hit a sac fly, scoring Carter Rust from third.

Peschl got the win on the mound, his second of the year. The sophomore went 3.0 innings while striking out six and allowing one earned run.

West was 2-5 with a homer, a triple, two RBI, and two runs.

Giano Zuccaro didn't have a hit in the contest, but reached base three times via the walk.

The Golden Eagles will play a double header tomorrow to close the series. First pitch is set for 12 pm.
