Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagle Baseball team took both ends of a Sunday double-header against Fairmont State combining for 29 hits and 31 runs on the day.
Game One: Charleston 19, Fairmont State 5
The Golden Eagles bats would strike first and strike often in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. Acting as the visiting team even with the games being played at Segra Field, Charleston would score 6 runs in the top of the first inning. RBI singles by
Andre Martinez,
Clay Hale, and
Hector Carreon-Herrara, along with an RBI double by
Evan Ulrich would prove to be all Charleston needed in game one of the double-header.
The Charleston offense continued to pound out hits as they scored four more runs in the third.
Zuccaro and
Dellerman doubled home three runs and
Klaserner made it 10-0 with a sacrifice fly to left.
Zuccaro brought home two more on an double down the right field line in the fourth inning, before
West hit a ball into the parking lot beyond right field. The three-run blast was his eighth of the season and put UC up 15-0.
Three more runs came home in the inning.
Cody Li doubled home a run, his first hit of the season and
Carreon-Herrara grounded out with a runner on third to extend the lead to 17-0.
McCallister tacked on two more runs with a single in the sixth to cap the scoring at 19 for the Golden Eagles.
Beckner got the win on the mound. He went 3.0 innings, allowed three earned while striking out three.
Lattig and
Douglas pitched 2.0 innings each and combined for four strikeouts. Lattig did not allow an earned run and walked just one. Douglas allowed two earned runs in the seventh while walking three.
The top four hitters of the lineup would go 9 for 12 collectively and combine for 9 RBIs on the day.
Dellerman went 2-2 with a walk, while Kyle West would go 3-3 with 3 RBIs and a 450' homerun.
Game Two: Charleston 12, Fairmont 3
Game two starter
Campbell Spradling did well to keep runners off base in the early innings for the second game of the twin bill. He got the win on the mound to improve his record to 1-0. He went 3.2 innings with six strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the first inning with a two out solo home run from
Dellerman.
Fairmont took their first lead of the series in the second as they scored two runs in the second.
Dellerman and
West went back to back in the third. Dellerman hit his eighth long ball of the year to take a 3-2 lead. West made it 4-2 with a line shot out to right field that left his bat at 116 mph.
UC added three more in the fourth. Herrera laced a double to left that scored a run and it was quickly followed by an Ulrich two run blast to left to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Fairmont scored on in the fourth inning but it would not be enough as Charleston stretched their lead to 12-3 in the seventh inning. West and Martinez both had RBI singles. Klaserner scored one as he reached on an error by the second baseman. For the second time in as many games,
McCallister capped the scoring with a two-RBI single in the seventh inning.
Dellerman was 3-3 with two home runs, three runs, and three RBI. West was 2-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs.
MacNeil,
Dean, and
Dzierwa combined for the last 3.2 innings. They allowed just two hits total with no earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts.
Charleston improved their record to 19-5 which is the best in the Mountain East Conference this year.
They will play next weekend at home on April 1-2 when they host Alderson Broaddus and Notre Dame College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
