Baseball Routs Alderson Broaddus 20-7, 19-7 in Saturday Doubleheader

Charleston, W. Va – Golden Eagle Baseball improved to 7-1 in the Mountain East Conference on Saturday, taking both games in the Saturday twin bill over Alderson Broaddus. Charleston scored 39 runs on 29 hits with 26 walks in the sweep.

Game One: Charleston 20, Alderson Broaddus 7

The Golden Eagles got on the board early and often in game one, jumping out to a 6-0 lead by end of the third inning. Scoring was highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Drew Klaserner and Drew Beckner in the bottom of the third.

The Battlers scored three runs in the fourth to cut the lead down to three, but the Charleston offense was relentless, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Beckner, Dellerman, Martinez, and Zuccaro all had run scoring hits in the inning.

Charleston put up six more runs the next inning and the rout was on. Foree had a two-RBI triple and Rust knocked in a run on a double to right center.

Adkins brought in a run on a single to center. Logan Parker notched his first collegiate hit in the sixth, scoring one on a single through the left side to cap the scoring at 20.

Alderson Broaddus scored four runs in the seventh but it would not be enough as Charleston easily took game one by a final of 20-3.

West was 2-3 with a triple, two runs, three walks, and a stolen base. Dellerman went 1-2 with three walks, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base. Zuccaro was 2-5 with three RBI and a double. Klaserner scored three runs with a home run and two walks. Beckner was 1-2 with a long ball and a walk.

Andrew Gormley got the win on the mound. The freshman improved to 4-0 after tossing 2.2 innings without allowing an earned run.

Game Two: Charleston 19, Alderson Broaddus 7

The Charleston offense continued to bash the baseball in game two. Dellerman led the way going 3 for 4 with four RBI, two doubles, a walk, and three runs in the second game of the doubleheader. Eight different hitters tallied hits in the game and every starter reached base at least once.

The Golden Eagles trailed 1-0 after the top of the first but West smoked his MEC leading tenth home run of the season to take the lead back 2-1 in the bottom of the first.

The Battlers scored one in the second inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Charleston scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third and led 6-2 after three full innings.

The Battlers rallied well in the fourth scoring five runs in the top of the frame to take a 7-6 lead. They hit two homers in the inning, the latter coming from Emmanuel Rodriguez that gave them the lead.

It would be short lived as the Clay Hale gave Charleston the lead right back in the bottom of the inning. Hale hit his third homer of the year to right, a two-run shot that gave Charleston the lead for good. Dellerman and West both knocked in a run with extra base hits in the inning.

UC scored four more in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 19-7 lead.

Cole Peschl got the win on the hill, his third of the season. The sophomore threw 3.0 innings without allowing a baserunner and fanning five over that span.

West had three RBI and scored two runs. Hale was 2-3 with three runs, two RBI, and two walks. McCallister had double, scored two runs and knocked in one while walking twice.

Charleston will take on Notre Dame College on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m. Games available on MEC.tv.
