Men's Golf Places Second in MEC Spring Classic, Johnson Earns Coach of the Year

Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagle Men's Golf team placed second in the MEC Spring Classic on Tuesday, March 28 at Edgewood Country Club. Head Coach Will Johnson was awarded Mountain East Conference Men's Golf Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
 
MEC teams came to Sissonville, WV to take on Charleston's home course, Edgewood Country Club. The par 71 course boasts a 73.2 course rating, a slope rating of 129 and spanning 6,927 yards from the tips.
 
Charleston opened on Monday shooting a 288, finishing tied for first after the first day of play. Rory Gorman was three-under on Monday, carding a 68 to lead the Golden Eagles. The freshman finished in a tie for third overall as he shot even 142 over both rounds.
 
On Tuesday, the Charleston squad shot a 294, which was second in the field of nine teams. Davis and Elkins College ran away with the lead on Tuesday, however, carding a 282 beating the Golden Eagles by eight strokes.
 
Four players were honored with All-MEC awards for 2023. The five combined rounds from the MEC Championships in the fall and the MEC Spring Classic were used to calculate all conference finishers.
 
Rory Gorman was named First Team All-MEC as a freshman. Erik Ulvang and Cole Darbyshire both earned second team recognition. Pau Sanchez was All-MEC honorable mention.
