Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagle baseball team is just one weekend away from Mountain East Conference play on March 18-19. They will host The University of Pitt at Johnstown in a three game set on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

UPJ and UC have faced off 19 times since 2011 and the Golden Eagles have won 14 of those contests. In 2022, Charleston was victorious in their three-game series at Segra Field, winning 3-1 and 8-4 in the front and tail ends of the series.
Charleston Preview
UC is currently on a five-game win streak, winning nine of their last 10 games. A three-game sweep of Cedarville last weekend has moved the Golden Eagles to 8
th in the Atlantic Region poll. Overall, they are 9-4, their only series loss coming to No. 14 Wingate in the opening series of the season.
Charleston's bullpen this season has highlighted almost every one of their wins. Relievers have combined for 57.2 innings for a 4.53 ERA, 64 strikeouts, and 6 wins for the year. They have held opponents to a .234 average while surrendering 37 walks. Overall opponents are hitting just .201 with two outs and .249 with runners on base against the entire pitching staff (starters included).
The biggest strength of the bullpen is how they fare with inherited runners. As a team the bullpen has inherited 37 runners and only 17 of those have scored.
Caleb Rush leads all Charleston pitchers with a 0.00 ERA. He pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in a midweek game against Lincoln Memorial last week, striking out six and allowing one hit.
Austin Dzierwa and
Drew Beckner have pitched well in relief as well. Dzierwa has thrown 5.0 innings with nine strikeouts and only two hits. Beckner has 8.1 IP with seven strikeouts and a 2.16 ERA.
The offense is led by
JD Armstrong. The High Point transfer is hitting .368 with seven RBI and three extra base hits in 38 at bats.
Charleston's sluggers
Tyler Dellerman and
Kyle West have combined for 17 extra base hits in 97 at bats. Both are tied for the team lead with three long balls and Dellerman leads the team with 12 RBI.
Both Dellerman and West had phenomenal weekends at the dish against Cedarville. West was 6-9 with two home runs and a double in the series. Dellerman was 5-11 with five RBI, five runs, and two doubles.
Giano Zuccaro produced well prior to the last series against Cedarville, where he had just one hit in 10 at bats with two hit by pitches. He is hitting .342 with a team leading 12 runs and 10 RBI. He's tied for the team lead in stolen bases at five with Kyle West.
Pitt Johnstown Preview
UPJ is 6-4 overall this season, losing two games in a MEC/PSAC crossover tournament to Millersville and West Chester and winning their other two series against Concord and West Liberty. The Mountain Cats are led by Dylan Broderick on the offensive side. The redshirt senior leads the team average (.432), runs (14), hits (16), RBI (11), stolen bases (4) and total bases (30).
Their ace Rodney Shultz holds a team best 3.21 ERA in three starts. He has pitched in 14.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Ben Tomb has a team high 15 strikeouts and a 3.48 ERA, allowing just two extra base hits in 10 innings.
