Elkins, W. Va – The Charleston baseball team took two games from Davis and Elkins College in a Friday doubleheader.
Kyle West broke the school record for single season home runs as he hit four long balls in the doubleheader.
For the first time since February, Charleston would head on the road for a series. They faced off against the 7-24 Davis and Elkins College Senators who were fourth in the MEC heading into the series.
Game One – Charleston 15, Davis & Elkins 5
The Golden Eagles opted to use an opener for the second straight series.
Caleb Rush got the start and pitched one inning while allowing one earned run.
Ethan Soderna got the win on the mound after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three earned runs. He had six strikeouts and two walks in his team leading fourth win of the season.
Charleston plated six runs on five hits and two errors from the Senator defense in the second inning.
Tyler Dellerman tripled home two and
West singled home one.
Brayden McCallister and
AJ Karosas both knocked in a run in the third inning to bring the score to 8-1 after three.
Drew Klaserner hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, his team leading sixth of the season, that brought home another run for the Golden Eagles.
The Senators tacked on two in the bottom of the fourth and one run in both the sixth and seventh innings, but it would prove futile as Charleston easily won by a final score of 15-5.
Five Charleston hitters had two or more hits and every hitter in the starting lineup finished the game with a hit.
McCallister was 2 for 3 with three RBI.
Griffin Adkins was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and one run.
Game Two – Charleston 12, Davis & Elkins 7
Charleston got on the board early in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the second.
Karosas doubled home the first run of the game, and Adkins scored one on an RBI groundout.
West scored the first of four runs in the third inning, hitting his third home run of the day to extend the lead to 3-1.
McCallister, Ulrich, and Adkins all added runs in the inning to extend the lead to 6-1 after three.
Andre Martinez singled home
West in the fourth. He finished the game with three hits and a run scored.
The Senators would not go away quietly. Trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, they plated six runs on five hits with just one extra base hit in the inning.
The Golden Eagles responded with authority in the top of the next inning. Scoring five runs on six hits which included three consecutive home runs from
Giano Zuccaro,
Dellerman, and
West.
Cole Peschl closed out the last inning to give Charleston their fourth straight win. He earned the win on the mound and threw 1.1 innings without allowing an earned run.
Kyle West finished the doubleheader going 6 for 8 with four home runs, seven RBI, six runs, two walks, and three stolen bases. He broke the single season record for home runs at the University of Charleston and sits at an MEC leading 15 home runs on the season.
Dellerman finished the day 5 for 9 with four RBI and five runs scored including a home run, a triple, and a walk.
McCallister was 5 for 8 with four RBI, three runs and two stolen bases.
Clay Hale was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored in the double header.
