Charleston, W. Va – The Charleston Baseball team dropped split a twin bill with Notre Dame College on Sunday, triumphing 4-2 in game one and falling 7-8 in game two. They moved to 22-6 overall and 10-2 in Mountain East Conference play as they finished their North Division games.
Game One: Charleston 4, Notre Dame 2
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in game one before bashing back-to-back home runs in the fifth to win the ball game.
Starter
Drew Beckner went 3.0 innings without allowing a run. He struck out four and walked one before exiting after the third inning.
The Falcons tagged reliever
Robby Shepherd for two runs in the fourth inning. They would tally two runs on two hits but left three on base in the inning.
Reliever
Cody Godbold entered in the fourth to get the final two outs without allowing an earned an earned run. He finished his day allowing just two baserunners over 1.2 innings. He got the win when the Golden Eagles took the lead in the fifth.
Charleston responded in the fifth inning. With runners on first and third
Brayden McCallister stole second and an errant throw allowed
Hector Carreon-Herrara to score from third.
Tyler Dellerman quickly brought home a pair to take the lead on his eighth homer of the season.
Kyle West then hit a solo shot the very next at bat that added a big insurance run. His MEC leading eleventh long ball of the year would be all the Golden Eagles needed to take game one.
Campbell Spradling slammed the door in the final two innings. The sophomore earned the save tossing 2.0 innings without allowing a walk or a hit and fanning one.
Charleston's top five hitters in the order all had one hit each.
Game Two: Notre Dame 8, Charleston 7
UC got on the board early in game two,
Dellerman smacked a two-run blast to right in the first inning to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Starter
Owen MacNeil pitched well in his first start of the season but was tagged for a run in the second inning. A double to right would be the only run allowed by the junior right hander. He finished his day with 4.0 innings pitched, three strikeouts, and one walk.
Evan Ulrich hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-1. However, Notre Dame responded in the fifth inning. They scored four runs on on four hits with two walks in the frame to take a 5-3 lead.
Charleston answered with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Andre Martinez brought home a run on a sacrifice fly and
Drew Klaserner singled home one. UC plated two more on a double steal attempt by
McCallister and
Klaserner. Both scored after a couple of errors by the Notre Dame defense. UC led 7-5 after the fifth.
Caleb Rush, who entered in the fifth was tagged for a run in the sixth inning.
Cole Peschl entered in relief and worked out of the first jam to limit the damage to just one run.
Notre Dame battled back once again in the seventh inning. They got back to back hits with two outs in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. A seeing eye single up the middle from Alex Mendoza brought home two and the Falcons would go on to steal one from the top team in the MEC.
Klaserner was 2-4 with a run and an RBI in the loss. Hale was 1-2 with two walks.
Dellerman went 1-3 with a two run home, a walk, and two runs.
West walked twice and scored a run.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday as they begin play against the MEC South Division against Glenville State at home. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
