Athens, W. Va – Charleston Baseball split their doubleheader against the Mountain Lions of Concord University. After coming up just short in game one 10-11, The Golden Eagles answered with a decisive 7-0 victory in game two.
Tyler Dellerman took the MEC lead in home runs, clubbing two in the second game bringing his season total to 16.
Game One – Concord 11, Charleston 10
Charleston came out firing in the series opener as they scored four runs in the opening frame.
Drew Klaserner opened the contest with a leadoff home run, his fifth of the year that put Charleston on top early. He was followed a few batters later by
Giano Zuccaro, who blasted his sixth home run of the season to an identical spot as Klaserner's. The three-run shot gave Charleston a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Concord's Kyle Keenan responded in the bottom of the frame by smoking a three-run homer to left. The swing would mark the first three out of eleven straight unanswered runs by the Mountain Lions.
The lead was relinquished after two runs came across for Concord in the second inning. However, the real damage came in the next inning where the Mountain Lions scored five straight runs before the Golden Eagles recorded an out and took a 10-4 lead.
Ethan Soderna, who started the game on the hill was pulled after just two innings and allowing five runs on four hits with three strikeouts. He handed the rock to
Drew Beckner, who struggled to miss barrels in his outing. He allowed five earned runs on four hits and a walk without recording an out.
Owen MacNeil finally came in to settle the flood that came from the Concord bats in the first two innings. He finished out the contest, throwing 4.0 innings while allowing just one earned run.
The lone run off
MacNeil came in the sixth inning off the bat of Concord's MJ Hunter. His RBI double came with Charleston already trailing 10-4 at the time, but it proved to be a vital run by the end of the game.
Down 11-4 in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles had but a prayer to tie the game. Somehow, however, the Golden Eagles managed to push across five straight runs before Concord could retire a batter in the seventh.
Dellerman singled a run home,
Kyle West knocked in one on an infield single. The flurry of RBI singles continued as
Andre Martinez and
Zuccaro knocked in one run each on singles to bring the score to 11-8.
Down three,
Clay Hale singled home a run and brought the tying run to the plate in
AJ Karosas. Karosas singled home a run and Charleston from thin air Charleston had the go ahead run on first base with just one out in the seventh. However,
Carter Rust and
Klaserner both failed to tally hits to tie the game and the Golden Eagles lost a heartbreaker 11-10 in the series opener.
Klaserner, Dellerman, and Zuccaro all recorded two hits and scored two runs in the ballgame. Zuccaro had four RBI and was also hit by a pitch.
Game Two – Charleston 10, Concord 0
Charleston bounced back in game two as
Cole Peschl and
Dwayne Sumler combined to shut out Concord for just the second time this year.
Sumler started on the hill and struck out three and walked one while allowing just four hits.
Peschl entered in the fourth and got the final out of that inning. He struck out six while picking up a team leading seventh win. The duo gave up seven hits combined with five of the seven being two-baggers, however they managed to strand nine runners to combine for the shutout.
Charleston scored runs in three of the seven innings.
McCallister and
Hale both singled in the second to score two runs and
Beckner brought in one on an RBI groundout.
Three more runs came across in the fifth bringing the score to 6-0.
Dellerman hit his first home run of the game in the frame, a two-run shot that tied him for the team lead in long balls.
In the seventh the Golden Eagles plated four more runs.
Dellerman started the scoring, smacking a solo shot to left center that gave him the team lead in home runs over teammate
Kyle West.
The other three runs came from the bats of McCallister, Hale, and
Griffin Adkins. Hale had an RBI single and ended his afternoon with two hits and two RBI.
Dellerman was 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs. Kyle West was held hitless, but walked twice and scored once.
The series concludes on Sunday with both teams hoping for a sweep and a series win. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
