Charleston Set to Host NCAA Atlantic Regional on Home Turf

Charleston, W. Va – For the second time in the last seven years, the Charleston Golden Eagles will be hosting the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, only this time it will be played on their newly turfed field at the Watt Powell Annex. The last time Charleston hosted the Atlantic Regional in 2016, they outscored their opponents 12-5 in three wins to advance to the NCAA Atlantic Super Regional, where they would defeat the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan and advance to the Division II College World Series.

The Golden Eagles are coming off of a stellar performance in Salem, VA where they would be crowned the Mountain East Conference Tournament Champions for the first time in program history. The team has heavily relied on Brianna McCown's right arm. She has been a vital weapon for Charleston this season, coming further into the post-season with an ERA of 1.77 and dealing 215 strikeouts. Dani Bauer, the reliable veteran, has also played a crucial factor with her 1.71 ERA and 86 strikeouts. They would allow just one run in the two final games played in MEC Tournament against Davis & Elkins to secure the title in dominating fashion.

Offensively, Charleston has been crushing the ball at the plate. They are led by Hannah Rose who comes into the Regional with an incredible .519 hitting percentage with 83 hits and bringing in 68 runs for the Golden Eagles. Isabella Andujar will also be a person of interest for opponents as she comes in hitting .360 and knocking home 58 RBIs this season, with many of those coming from her 18 homeruns. In the MEC Tournament, she would sail four over the fence to help Charleston earn their first MEC title.

The Golden Eagles come into the tournament as the 3rd seed in the region, behind East Stroudsburg as the 1stand Shippensburg as the 2nd. In their first matchup, they will face the 6th seeded Kutztown Golden Bears who come to the Capital City with a 22-10 PSAC record. In their conference tournament, they would be knocked out by East Stroudsburg in Quakertown, PA accompanied with a loss to Bloomsburg by a score of 5-3. Kutztown is led by Sarah Harvey who has knocked home 39 runs in 97 total at bats with a .399 hitting percentage. The Senior from Vermont has 61 hits to her name with nine of them going the distance.

Charleston and Kutztown will square off this Thursday on May 11th at 12:00 PM.
