Baseball outslugs Concord 21-11 in Mountain East Conference Tournament Semifinal

| By:
Box Score Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagle baseball team will head to the MEC Tournament championship game for the second straight season. They soundly defeated Concord 21-11 in the semifinal game by pounding out 16 hits. They will have a date with the Bobcats of Frostburg State in the MEC championship game.

Charleston's historic offense continued to mash in the tournament against Concord. They scored 19 runs in the first four innings and had nine extra base hits in total.

They got going with a six run bottom of the first inning. Evan Ulrich's three run double highlighted the inning as eleven Charleston hitters swung it in the top of the first.

Concord answered back in the second with a six run top half, however the Golden Eagles took a 8-6 lead in the next inning as they plated two runs in the bottom of the frame.

UC scored another run in the third before exploding for 10 runs in the fourth inning. All the runs in the fourth scored with two outs as the offense had 10 hits in the inning.

Highlighting the scoring in the inning was Clay Hale, who deposited his 10th home run of the season into the road beyond right field at GoMart Ballpark. The three-run blast would give UC a 14-7 lead at the time. But the surge wouldn't stop there as five more runs would cross home in the inning. Drew Klaserner capped the scoring with a two-run single to make it 19-7 after four.

Starting pitcher Ethan Soderna had a gutsy performance in the semifinal game. He threw 120 pitches and tossed 6.0 innings in an effort to save some arms for the potential championship game against Frostburg State. He struck out three in the outing and gave up eleven runs, but just seven of those were earned.

UC would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give them a ten-run lead heading into the seventh.

Owen MacNeil would close out the win, as the game was called after seven for a 10-run rule. MacNeil allowed two hits in the inning but got out of the jam with a strikeout.

Every Charleston hitter had a hit and a run scored in the game, and all but two had runs batted in.

Kyle West was 3 for 5 with two doubles, a walk, a couple RBI, and three runs. Hale was 2 for 4 with a three run home run, two walks, and three runs.

Ulrich led the team with four RBI while also walking and scoring two times.

AJ Karosas was 2 for 2 with two doubles, two walks, three RBI, two runs, and was also hit by a pitch.

The Golden Eagles will take on the MEC North Division preseason favorite in Frostburg State with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m.
