Seven Selected to All-MEC Teams, Dellerman Named Player of the Year

| By:
Charleston, W. Va – The Mountain East Conference office announced the 2023 baseball postseason awards on Tuesday.  Charleston had seven all conference selections in total and catcher Tyler Dellerman was named MEC Player of the Year.

Dellerman, a grad student out of Maineville, Ohio led the league in with 57 RBI and 60 runs. He hit 16 home runs, 14 doubles, slugged .767, and reached base at a .495 clip.

"It's a great honor, but it's really a team award," commented Dellerman about his selection, "I couldn't have done it without the other guys around me like Kyle West, who also had a great year and could have easily been selected for player of the year".

After falling just short of player of the year honor last season this year Dellerman would finally receive the selection for the 2023 season. As a freshman he was named the league's freshman of the year and has made All-MEC teams for the last four seasons. In his career he has hit 45 home runs, 63 doubles, with 188 runs scored, and 198 RBI while slashing .356/.464/.661.

The Golden Eagles had four All-MEC first team selections in Dellerman, Kyle West, Giano Zuccaro, and Cole Peschl.

West, a sophomore from Hedgesville, WV was arguably the best hitter in the MEC this season. He led the MEC in average (.403), on base percentage (.538), slugging percentage (.906), home runs (19), and on base plus slugging (1.444). He was second the league for runs, hits, walks, and stolen bases. He knocked in 51 runs and scored 59 times in 48 games this season. He also set the school single season home run record and tied the MEC record for home runs in a season at 19.

The Cleveland native slugged .659, reached base at a .520 clip, and, scored 47 runs, and tallied 43 RBI. He was top eight in the MEC in those categories while also stealing 14 bases this season.

Peschl, a sophomore from Fairmont, WV was picked as only reliever on the first team. Although not reaching the number of innings required to qualify for earned run average rankings and batting average against rankings, his 2.16 ERA and .195 opponent batting average would were atop the Mountain East Conference ranks. He struck out 63 batters through 41.2 innings of work and finished the regular season with a team best 8-1 record. His three saves were top three in the MEC rankings, and he led the team in that category.

Dane Sykes was the lone Charleston player to earn second team honors. The Tennessee native finished the regular season with a team best 81 strikeouts through 58.0 innings. He was first on the team among qualified starters with a 4.66 earned run average and was seventh in the MEC in that category. He led the league in looking strikeouts, freezing 25 opponents on the season.

Two Charleston players, Clay Hale and Ethan Soderna, were named honorable mention. Soderna was third on the team with 61 season strikeouts through 55.1 innings. His season was highlighted when he completed the bulk of a combined no hitter against Glenville State on April 7th. He held opponents to a .258 average for the season and was 5-3 on the mound for the season.
