Charleston Cruises to 76-16 Victory on Homecoming Weekend

Charleston, W. Va – On Saturday, the University of Charleston took on the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats for their homecoming matchup in front of a filled crowd at Laidley Field. Charleston came into this one as winners of all their contests and looked to add another victory to their record, while the Bobcats came to the Capital City looking for their first win of the campaign.

Records: UC 4-0 (4-0 MEC), WVWC 0-3 (0-2 MEC)

How it Happened
With the way that Charleston has been playing so far this season, it was expected of them to start fast and get on the board early after forcing a stop with the defense; what wasn't expected was the first points of the game coming from a blocked punt after the opening possession. Breece Hoff bullied his way through the punt unit of West Virginia Wesleyan and got his hands on the punt, which set up Thomas Ashworth for the easy scoop-and-score from 13 yards away for the quick 7-0 lead.

The next two Charleston possessions would not disappoint as they found the promise land on each drive. Chavon Wright did what he does best and found his way into the endzone on a 23-yard run to push the lead to two scores with 10:55 left in the quarter. Tae Marrero would put his name on the box score on a hard-earned touchdown from 44 yards out for the 21-0 lead.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Michael Schweinefuss would electrify the homecoming crowd with a 69-yard pick-six to push Charleston even further ahead on the board.

After a large kickoff return for the Bobcats, the visitors would find points off the leg of Liam Depp on a 38-yard field goal with 12:23 left in the half.

Charleston would once again march down the field where Wright would finish the drive punching his way into the endzone for the 34-3 lead. Dekavis Preston would join in on the fun on Wesleyan's next drive with a 40-yard pick-six to add on to the large lead for the Golden Eagles.

Wright would find his third score of the day on Charleston's next drive from five yards out with 3:26 remaining in the quarter to give Charleston a 48-3 advantage.

After a 34-yard punt return for Marrero, the Golden Eagles would score their final touchdown of the half on a nice pitch-and-catch in the corner of the endzone from Ean Hamric to Marquan Herron from 18 yards away, giving Charleston a 55-3 advantage as they trotted into the locker room.

Following the break, the Bobcats would capitalize with great field position after a turnover from the Golden Eagles. Depp would hit his second triple of the day from 27 yards, making the score 55-6.

Ean Hamric would get the ball rolling once more with the use of his legs this time as he bolted for a 40-yard rushing touchdown to get the lead to 62-6.

Wesleyan would score a touchdown at the 10:33 mark on a quick throw from Nathan Payne to Nathaniel Garnett Jr. from six yards away. The Bobcats found a glimpse of light after blocking a punt and cashing it in for Depp's third field goal of the afternoon from 31 yards out, but Charleston would not allow for any more points from the visitors for the rest of the game.

Eddie Scott would come into the game for the first time this season and he would not let the opportunity go to waste. Scott found a rushing score at the goal line bullying his way through the line to give Charleston a 69-16 lead.

The final score of the game would be the longest play of the day, as Zachariah Williams came into the game and ran nearly the full length of the field and found his way into the endzone from 93 yards away to put Charleston on the board with a 76-16 advantage.

Charleston would take the win in dominating fashion on Homecoming Weekend, moving to 4-0 on the year.
