Charleston Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Wesleyan to Improve to 19-6

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The University of Charleston women's volleyball team (19-6, 8-2 MEC) defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (12-12, 2-9 MEC) in straight sets on Tuesday night at the Wehrle Innovation Center. The Golden Eagles controlled the match with balanced contributions across the board, taking the sets 25-20, 25-20, and 25-23.

Emma Shepherd led the way with a match-high 12 kills on a .313 hitting percentage, adding two service aces and six digs. Kate Strong was also effective, contributing six kills and a team-best four blocks. Riley Hoff provided nine kills on a .304 hitting percentage while recording 13 digs to anchor the back row. Libero Chloe Fortner added stability on defense with 13 digs.

The first set was tightly contested early, with multiple ties and lead changes as both teams found their footing. Shepherd led Charleston's attack, notching several key kills, while Hoff provided defensive support with crucial digs to keep rallies alive. The Golden Eagles pulled away late in the set, securing a 25-20 win after a 4-1 run to close it out.

In the second set, Charleston improved its efficiency, hitting .237 as a team. Strong asserted herself at the net, recording two blocks in the frame to disrupt Wesleyan's offense. Shepherd continued her dominance with timely kills, and Hoff added stability in the back row. The Golden Eagles built an early lead and maintained control throughout, again taking the set by a 25-20 margin.

The third set proved to be the most competitive, with Wesleyan pushing Charleston to the brink. Strong and Shepherd combined for several crucial points, helping the Golden Eagles stay neck-and-neck with Wesleyan. Fortner's defensive effort shined in the set, as the libero tallied several digs to extend rallies. Charleston managed to stave off Wesleyan's late push, clinching the set 25-23 to complete the sweep.
