CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Nov. 1) — University of Charleston Women's Volleyball (20-6, 9-2 MEC) continued their streak of excellence, securing their fourth consecutive 20-win season with a 3-1 triumph over MEC North Division leader Wheeling University (18-9, 9-2 MEC) on Wednesday night at the Wehrle Innovation Center. The Golden Eagles claimed the match 25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20, becoming the first team in the conference to reach this milestone in 2024.
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles came out strong in the first set, establishing a steady rhythm to win 25-19. Charleston continued their momentum into the second set, where they dominated with a 25-17 win, fueled by solid offensive execution from Patrycja Majos and Emma Shepherd. Wheeling rallied back in the third set, taking it 25-17 to narrow Charleston's lead, but Charleston regained control in the fourth set, sealing the match at 25-20.
Majos powered Charleston's offense with a standout performance, notching 16 kills on a .536 hitting percentage, along with two service aces and one solo block. Shepherd complemented Majos's efforts, tallying 14 kills, 10 digs, and three solo blocks, while Kate Strong recorded four solo blocks, halting Wheeling's offensive efforts and providing crucial momentum at the net.
With this win, Head Coach Tyler Kanelos is now just one victory shy of his 100th career win, an impressive milestone highlighting his leadership and the continued success of the Golden Eagles' program. Charleston remains strong in second place in the MEC South Division, close behind West Virginia State University, and their momentum in reaching 20 wins for the fourth consecutive year reinforces their standing as a formidable team in the conference.
