Glenville, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles took three of four from the Pioneers in their four game weekend series. Charleston won the first three games and dropped game four on Sunday afternoon.
GAME 1
The Basics:
Location: Sue Morris Sports Complex
Score: UC 6, GSU 5
Records: UC 22-6 (9-2 MEC), Glenville 15-13 (8-3 MEC)
How it Happened:
After a scoreless opening inning, Charleston capitalized on an infield dribbler from Evan Ulrich to notch the game's initial run in the top of the 2nd. In response, the Pioneers surged ahead in the bottom half, after Charleston pitching hit a Pioneer with bases loaded.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the bottom of the third with a solo homerun to go ahead 3-1 over the Golden Eagles. However, Charleston steadily narrowed the gap, scoring in the 4th and 5th innings. Charleston plated their second run of the game courtesy of a Carter Rust single that scored Kasey Finck who led off the inning with a walk. In the fifth, Charleston plated a run on a JD Armstrong single that scored Brayden McCallister and then the next batter up, Casey Finck flew out to left field, allowing Drew Klaserner to tag up on the play. The two-run inning leading to Charleston taking the 4-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Charleston scored a fifth run on an AJ Karosas single up the middle that allowed the speedy Carter Rust to score from second. The RBI single pushed the Golden Eagles ahead 5-3 and the Pioneers found themselves facing their final outs in the top of the seventh.
The leadoff Pioneer reached base, setting the stage for Fabian Escalante, who delivered a clutch game-tying home run, forcing the game into extra innings.
Both teams had opportunities in the ensuing frames, but it was Charleston who ultimately secured a 6-5 victory with a solo home run from Evan Ulrich in the top of the 11th. Charleston kept Glenville off the boards in the bottom of the frame to collect the extra inning victory.
GAME 2
The Basics:
Location: Sue Morris Sports Complex
Score: UC 8, GSU 0
Records: UC 23-6 (10-2 MEC), Glenville 15-14 (8-4 MEC)
How it Happened:
Charleston capitalized early on, striking in the first inning with a run driven in by a double down the line from Eric Chartier, Drew Klaserner scoring after leading off the inning with a walk.
The Golden Eagles then added four more runs in the top of the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly from AJ Karosas and a few batters later a powerful three-run home run from JD Armstrong.
With a 5-0 lead, Charleston continued to tack on runs in the top of the third, scoring all their runs with two additional home runs, one solo bomb from Eric Chartier and a two-run shot from AJ Karosas.
With an 8-0 deficit, the Pioneers struggled to bring runners across the plate for the rest of the game, ultimately conceding to the Golden Eagles.
In the seven-inning game, Eric Chartier was 2-3 with two RBI, JD Armstrong went 1-3 with three RBI, and AJ Karosas was 1-2 with three RBI which spearheaded the Golden Eagles' offense. Owen MacNeil pitched five innings to clinch the win, holding the Pioneers scoreless on four hits and four walks while striking out four.
GAME 3
The Basics:

Score: UC 2, GSU 1
Records: UC 24-6 (11-2 MEC), Glenville 15-15 (8-5 MEC)
How it Happened:
Charleston jumped on the board early in the top of the first in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. The first run of the contest coming on a Casey Finck single through the left side that scored leadoff batter Drew Klaserner who drew a walk to start the game.
Following the lone run in the top of the first, the pitcher's duel began between Charleston's Trace Hartman and Glenville's Austin Corn. The game was scoreless until Glenville finally got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff walk came back to hurt Charleston as Glenville's only hit of the inning brought in the game tying run to bring the score to 1-1.
The deciding run of the game came in an unorthodox manner. Carter Rust reached base on a leadoff walk and would move over second on an Evan Ulrich single. Both runners would advance a bag on the double steal to put runners on second and third with one out for the Golden Eagles. A clutch strikeout from Glenville put two outs on the board and Charleston just one out to work with to score a run. Unfortunately for Glenville, a wild pitch allowed Carter Rust to score and gave Charleston the go ahead run. The Pioneers got the next batter to ground out heading to the bottom half of the inning trailing 2-1.
Charleston's Scott Templeton sat the Pioneers down in order to collect the victory for the Golden Eagles.
GAME 4
The Basics:
Location: Sue Morris Sports Complex
Score: UC 2, GSU 15
Records: UC 24-7 (11-3 MEC), Glenville 16-15 (9-5 MEC)
How it Happened:
Game four of the series was all Glenville State, the Pioneers taking the victory 15-2 over the Golden Eagles. Charleston's two runs of the contest coming from a Brayden McCallister two run blast to left field. The homerun came in the fourth inning, bringing the score at that time to 6-2 Glenville. The Pioneers proceeded to plate nine additional runs in the next three innings for the 15-2 win.
JD Armstrong notched two hits, while Brayden McCallister contributed a hit and accounted for both of Charleston's RBIs. Dwayne Sumler endured a challenging outing, pitching just one inning and conceding four runs (all earned) on three hits and a walk, resulting in the loss for Charleston.
