Golden Eagles Blast Ten Home Runs in Series Sweep Over Davis & Elkins

Charleston, W.Va. – Charleston swept the series against Davis & Elkins College, adding four wins to improve to 28-7 overall.
 
GAME 1
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 20, D&E 2
Records: UC 25-7 (12-3 MEC), Davis & Elkins 0-33 (0-15 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
The Senators got on the board in the first inning after Logan Bradish singled, scoring one run.
Eric Chartier singled, which helped Charleston tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
 
The Golden Eagles flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs on six hits to take a 7-1 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a home run to right field by AJ Karosas that drove in two runs.
 
Charleston then scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning. Brayden McCallister singled and scoring a run, Drew Klaserner hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, JD Armstrong doubled to bring in a run, Eirc Chartier hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI, and Hector Carreon-Hererra homered to right field, bringing in two runs.
 
Davis & Elkins Mason Brenneman hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the fifth for the Senators second run of the game, 17-2 Charleston leading.
 
Charleston then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run to right field by Drew Klaserner.
 
Austin Dzierwa earned the win for Charleston, allowing three hits and two runs over five innings, striking out two and walking one. Zane Lattig and Cody Godbold each came on in relief for Charleston and shutdown the Senators, not allowing a hit.
 
Charleston collected 21 hits in the game. Carreon-Hererra, Finck, and Armstrong each collected three hits for the Golden Eagles. McCallister, Karosas, Evan Ulrich, and Carter Rust each collected multiple hits for Charleston. The Golden Eagles were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error.
 
GAME 2
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 13, D&E 4
Records: UC 26-7 (13-3 MEC), Davis & Elkins 0-34 (0-16 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
Drew Klaserner showed a strong eye at the plate on Saturday, as Klaserner walked three times while leading Charleston Golden Eagles to a 13-4 victory over the Senators in game two.
 
Charleston got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Casey Finck singled to score one run, Drew Klaserner hit a three-run blast and Evan Ulrich grounded out but collected an RBI.
 
The Golden Eagles then added one run in the third after Carter Rust singled after a six-pitch at-bat.
 
Owen MacNeil led things off on the bump for Charleston, giving up four hits and four runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking three. Andrew Gormley earned the win for Charleston. The reliever allowed two hits and zero runs over three and one-third innings, striking out two and walking two. Scott Templeton also tossed two innings of scoreless ball for Charleston Golden Eagles in relief. He surrendered zero hits, striking out two and walking none.
 
In the victory, Charleston accumulated 12 good fir 13 runs. Carreon-Hererra, Karosas, Finck, and Rust each collected two hits for the Golden Eagles. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Carreon-Hererra stole three bases which led the teams six in the seven-ball game.
 
GAME 3
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 14, D&E 3
Records: UC 27-7 (14-3 MEC), Davis & Elkins 0-35 (0-17 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
The Senators opened the scoring in the top of the first after a Charleston throwing error allowed a run to score.
 
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a Casey Finck three run no doubter to right field to give Charleston the edge, 3-1.
 
Charleston then added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after JD
Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly, Finck singled, and Drew Klaserner singled, each scoring one run.
 
Charleston once again added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Lane Weismiller hit a sacrifice fly, Damian Witty singled, and the Senators committed an error, each allowing a run to score.
 
Trace Hartman earned the win for Charleston, surrendering three hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking none. Max Wagar tossed one inning of scoreless ball for Charleston in relief giving up one hit, striking out one and walking one.
 
The Golden Eagles piled up 15 hits in the game. Damian Witty led Charleston with five hits in five at bats from the leadoff position. Klaserner and Carter Rust each collected multiple hits for Charleston.
 
GAME 4
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 11, D&E 6
Records: UC 28-7 (15-3 MEC), Davis & Elkins 0-36 (0-18 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
 Charleston got things off to a hot start in the bottom of the first with back-to-back-to-back jacks from Drew Klaserner, Hector Carreon-Herrera, and AJ Karosas.
 
The Golden Eagles continued to score runs over the next several innings with hits from Karosas, McCallister, and Carreon-Herrera, Charleston with a 10-0 advantage heading into the sixth.
 
D&E got on the board and scored six runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Logan Bradish singled, scoring two runs, Jett Walters doubled, scoring one run, and an error scored three runs.
 
Charleston scored their final run of the weekend in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to right field by Damian Witty, the first of his collegiate career.
 
Trey Ritchie headed to the bump in the top of the seventh and made quick work of the Senators, sitting them down to close out the game for Charleston. Dwayne Sumler would be credited with the win after allowing just one hit on three innings pitched. Campbell Spradling and Eugene Gay also saw an inning of work each for Charleston, both with shutout innings.
 
Up Next:
The Golden Eagles will travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College for a four-game series. The first game with the Bobcats is set for 1:00PM Saturday, April 20th.
