West Virginia Wesleyan Edges Charleston in a Five Set Battle

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston hosted West Virginia Wesleyan at the Wehrle Innovation Center, and the match went the way of the Bobcats 3 to 2. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a two-set lead before Wesleyan rallied. Set scores were 18 to 25, 23 to 25, 25 to 17, 25 to 22, and 15 to 10.

The Basics:
Location: Wehrle Innovation Center
Score: 3-2 West Virginia Wesleyan College (18-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-10)
Records: UC 8-8 (1-1, MEC), West Virginia Wesleyan 9-4 (1-0, MEC)

How it Happened:

Charleston controlled the start. In set one the Golden Eagles opened 8 to 0, absorbed a Wesleyan push to 11 to 7, and answered with five straight for a 16 to 7 cushion. UC later led 23 to 14. The Bobcats closed to 23 to 18, but a Wesleyan service error and a Charleston ace ended it 25 to 18. In set two UC again jumped in front 4 to 0. Wesleyan chipped it to 15 to 14 Charleston, then the Eagles ran off six straight to build a seven-point margin. That cushion held and UC took the set 25 to 23 for a 2 to 0 match lead.

Wesleyan turned the match in the third. Tied 6 to 6, the Bobcats grabbed the lead and used steady defense to turn digs into points, winning 25 to 17. Set four began 8 to 4 Charleston before a 10 to 1 Bobcats run flipped it to 14 to 9. UC answered, using WVWC errors and a kill from Kate Strong to tie it 14 to 14, and the teams traded points to 22 to 21 Wesleyan. Two late UC errors and an Emily Denison kill closed the frame 25 to 22 and forced a fifth. The deciding set was 5 to 5 when Wesleyan strung together seven straight to make it 11 to 5. The gap held, and the Bobcats finished 15 to 10 to win the match.
