Charleston, W.Va. — The University of Charleston men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, falling 81–79 to Daemen University in a non-conference matchup that came down to the final seconds inside the Wehrle Innovation Center.
The Basics:
Location: Wehlre Innovation Center
Score: UC 79, Daemen 81
Records: Charleston 2-2, Daemen 6-0
How it Happened:
Despite the loss, Charleston delivered one of its most efficient offensive performances of the young season. The Golden Eagles shot 56.3% from the field, consistently finding quality looks and answering every Daemen run with poised, confident play on the offensive end.
The problem came in the possession battle. Nineteen turnovers and too many second-chance opportunities for the Wildcats ultimately created the margin Charleston struggled to overcome. Daemen capitalized with 24 second-chance points, repeatedly extending possessions that Charleston had initially defended well. Still, the Golden Eagles fought until the final whistle. In a game that featured 12 lead changes and momentum swings on nearly every trip down the court, Charleston matched Daemen's physicality and grit. The Golden Eagles responded to pressure, pushed the pace when they needed to, and kept themselves in position to win in the final minute.
Charleston had the ball in a tie game with under 10 seconds to play, but a late turnover opened the door for Daemen, who converted on a tip-in with five seconds left. The Golden Eagles' last-second heave fell short, sealing the narrow defeat.
The Golden Eagles will look to turn the page quickly as they continue non-conference play and gear up for the start of Mountain East Conference action.
