DANIELS, W.Va. – Brogan Bennett, a West Liberty senior from Mantua, Utah, held off all challengers to win the 2024 Mountain East Conference Men's Golf individual title on Wednesday afternoon. Bennett sat atop the leaderboard at the end of the second round on Tuesday and throughout Wednesday's decisive final 18 holes.
The University of Charleston survived a three-way battle to win the MEC team championship by two strokes over West Liberty and Davis & Elkins, an outcome that was not decided until the final hole.
Bennett caught fire during Tuesday's second round, finishing with a four-under 68 on the par 72 Cobb Course at the Resort at Glade Springs. Bennett recorded four birdies on the back nine on Tuesday, but had four bogeys in the final 10 holes on Wednesday as several challengers surfaced. Bennett outlasted UC's Carlos Fernandez Mortera, Wheeling's Ryan Courtney, UC's Williams Carestam and UC's Erik Ulvang.
The quintet of Bennett, Fernandez Mortera, Courtney, Carestam and Ulvang earned MEC all-tournament honors for finishing in the top five. Fernandez Mortera fired an even-par 72 on Wednesday to tie Courtney as the runner-up. Carestam was +4 for the three-day, 54-hole stroke play event after leading following Monday's opening round. Carestam made a birdie on Wednesday on the 549-yard, par-5 No. 18 to give UC the team title.
UC finished +26 as a team, besting the +28 scores from West Liberty and Davis & Elkins. Wheeling and Fairmont State rounded out the top five team finishers.
