Charleston Sweeps the Series from Glenville State

Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles swept the Pioneers in a four game home series.  
 
GAME 1
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 9, GSU 2
Records: Charleston 11-18 (6-5 MEC), Glenville 14-15 (3-8 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagle bats were hot in game one of the series with the Pioneers of Glenville State, taking an early lead in the first inning with an Evan Ulrich RBI and then extending their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth with a five-run inning. The Pioneers scored their only runs of the game in top of the third to cut the deficit to 6-2.
 
The score held for the next several innings until the bottom of the sixth when the Golden Eagles tacked on three insurance runs to make the score 9-2 as they headed to the seventh.
 
Devin Fletcher picked up the win for Charleston on the mound in his 2.2 innings of relief. Tanner Evans closed out the last two innings for the Golden Eagles allowing no hits.
 
GAME 2
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 2, GSU 1
Records: Charleston 12-18 (7-5 MEC), Glenville 14-16 (3-9 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
Game two was a low scoring game featuring just two hits for UC and six for Glenville. The Golden Eagles plated their two runs for the game in the bottom of the first off not hits and no Glenville errors. The first two batters reached via free pass before Casey Finck grounded out to the right side picking up an RBI. The next run came off a strikeout pass ball allowing Collin Kemp to score from third.
 
Glenville plated their lone run in the top of the third. The leadoff hitter singled to right and then was moved to second on a routine sacrifice bunt. The next hitter to the plate singled to left field allowing the runner to score from second, Charleston still leading 2-1.
 
The Golden Eagles found a hit in the third and a hit in the fourth but neither team scored another run for the remainder of the game, Charleston taking the score 2-1 over the Glenville State Pioneers.
 
GAME 3
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 1, GSU 0
Records: Charleston 13-18 (8-5 MEC), Glenville 14-17 (3-10 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
Game three featured a pitching duel that had to go to the eighth inning to decide a winner. Both teams had five hits, and Charleston was eventually victorious with the lone run in the bottom of the eighth.
 
The eighth inning got started with a leadoff double from Casey Finck. Then with one out, Samuel Lemond was hit by a pitch to have runners on first and second. Ryan Comella then came to the plate in a pinch-hit situation and Comella made the most of his opportunity as he singled to the gap in right center, allowing the runner to score from second and walk it off for the Golden Eagles.
 
On the mound for Charleston, Austin Perando went five scoreless allowing four hits and collecting four strikeouts. Alec Mendoza collected the win with three innings pitched and allowing just one hit.
 
GAME 4
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 5, GSU 3
Records: Charleston 14-18 (9-5 MEC), Glenville 14-18 (3-11 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
The final game of the weekend was scoreless for the first three innings, Glenville finally breaking the stalemate in the top of the fourth with a three-run inning on two hits and one UC error. The Golden Eagles then plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. The first run came off a bunt and a throwing error. The next two runs were a product of a Casey Finck RBI single through the left side.
 
Charleston then scored the go ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth. The first run came off a Glenville error and then Ryan Comella plated the insurance run on an RBI single to center field.
 
With the 5-3 lead the Golden Eagles headed to the top of the seventh and the new pitcher Tanner Evans sat down the Pioneers in order to collect the save and complete the Golden Eagles series sweep.
